ABSTRACTThe Greek village of Molyvos in Lesvos, Greece (ancient Methymna, Ottoman Molova) stands across from the Turkish shores, offering vistas of the Aegean to the West and its Asia Minor hinterland to the North and Northeast. Molyvos inherited the ancient and medieval town’s geopolitical and ecclesiastical importance to become under the Ottomans the centre for the homonymous administrative district (kaza). This week's presentation explores the connected history of this Aegean locus by way of a family archive assembled in the first half of the 20th century and spanning over 100 years of history (1830s-1940s), on the one hand, and a young man's memoir from the late 19th c., on the other. The presentation traces in this material the links of two Greek families in a multi-confessional world crisscrossed by merchants, German archaeologists and travel-writers, Ottoman administrators and army cadres in order to take a peek into the life of a changing society in the time of nationalism.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY<a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a> studied political theory at the University of Athens and inspired by his professors of history, decided to risk all by applying for a graduate degree in Byzantine Studies. This took him to the University of Oxford where he studied Byzantine social and political history. After an interruption of four years dedicated to military service and to teaching at the American College of Greece in Athens, he moved to the US and the University of Michigan for his doctorate. Upon graduation, he joined the faculty at Simon Fraser University, where he teaches at the Department of Global Humanities and directs the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies. After years of research on all things Byzantine he is executing a pivot towards Late Ottoman and Modern Greek history, inspired by the family archive that will be the focus of today's talk.

MODERATOR BIOGRAPHY<a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-kotsovili.html" title="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-kotsovili.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Eirini Kotsovili</a> studied History, Hispanic studies at McGill University (B.A) and Literature at University of Oxford (M.St, D.Phil), where she was also Junior Dean (Somerville College). At SFU, she is a Committee member of the Stavros Niarchos Centre for Hellenic Studies, the Institute for the Humanities, as well as an Associate member of the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and the Department of World Languages and Literatures. She leads the Memory and Trauma research cluster, together with Dr. Capperdoni and Dr. Horncastle (HUM Dept) and serves as an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Modern Hellenism. Her research and teaching interests revolve around the notions of gender and identity, Modern Greece (comparative/transnational approach) and contemporary cultural production reflecting on the relation between past and present within various socio-political contexts.
