Enbridge Famous 5 Virtual Pink Tea Conversation w/ Senator LaBoucane-Benson

Prior to 1929, Canada’s constitution said that only “qualified persons”—meaning men only—could be appointed to the Senate. It was in that year that five courageous and idealistic Canadian women stepped onto the world stage to challenge these antiquated laws and conventions. By insisting that women be officially recognized as persons in the fullest legal sense of the word the “Famous Five”, as they became known, set a stirring example of leadership that altered all Commonwealth nations’ laws and, with it, the course of history.Today, the Famous 5 Foundation works to ensure the legacy of the Famous Five is known, and celebrated. In their spirit, we also honour today’s female trailblazers and work to inspire and empower future generations of leaders.

Senator LaBoucane-Benson holds the highest position an indigenous woman has ever held in the Senate of Canada and shares her story with us!

Message suit en français.Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson is a Metis Ukrainian Canadian who grew up on Treaty Six Territory in central Alberta and Saskatchewan which includes the Cree, the Ojibway and the Assiniboine nations as well as the Metis. For 23 years, she led research projects, video productions, and provided historic trauma-informed service delivery for the Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA). She also served as a mentor and lecturer for the Peter Lougheed Leadership College, a lecturer for the University of Alberta Executive Education, and the Conference Director and Lead Facilitator for the Nelson Mandela Dialogues, Canada 2017. Based on her PhD research, Senator LaBoucane-Benson’s first novel, The Outside Circle, a work of creative non-fiction about healing and reconciliation for an inner-city Aboriginal family was published in 2015 and received high praise and many awards.Dr. LaBoucane-Benson has been honoured for her many contributions by the Alberta Aboriginal Role Model Award for Education, the Legal Aid Access to Justice Award and Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Currently serving as the Government Liaison in the Senate, Senator LaBoucane-Benson holds the highest position an indigenous woman has ever held in the Senate of Canada!The F5F is grateful to Senator LaBoucane-Benson for agreeing to share her dynamic, accomplished leadership and inspire us.
