<h3>Emcee, Emily Mills</h3>

Emily Mills is the award-winning founder of How She Hustles, a Canadian brand that has connected and empowered BIPOC women entrepreneurs and leaders for over a decade. Through sold-out events and projects like HERstory in Black (CBC) and Startup &amp; Slay (CIBC, Shopify, Rogers), she amplifies diverse voices and fosters meaningful connections. With 25 years of experience in media, marketing and communications, Emily has collaborated with nearly 100 brands, including BMW Foundation, Penguin Random Houseand YWCA Canada.Named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women and a Toronto Metropolitan University Alumni of Distinction, Emily’s career highlights include hosting a roundtable with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and meeting Michelle Obama. <h3>Pannist, Trenyce Sweeney</h3>

Sweeney, a Toronto-based pannist, has been playing steelpan since the age of 3. With Jamaican, Montserratian, Trinidadian and Kittitian roots, steelpan is deeply tied to her heritage and she is passionate about sharing her love of music across all genres and audiences.Trenyce has performed at major events, including the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival (2017, 2019), Kiddies Carnival (2017, 2018), and for the Toronto Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Argonauts. A dedicated competitor, she has participated in Toronto Panorama annually since age 8 and performs with several steelbands. Committed to preserving Caribbean culture, Trenyce strives to inspire future generations through her music.

<h3>Drumming Performance - Ngoma Ensemble</h3>

Ngoma, meaning “drum and dance” in Swahili, was founded in 1995 by young performing artists dedicated to educating, empowering, and inspiring through African drum and dance. They celebrate their heritage and the boundless potential of their community.Committed to preserving African traditions, Ngoma fosters mentorship by engaging young artists to teach, choreograph, and lead workshops. This intergenerational approach nurtures leadership, creativity, and the fusion of traditional and modern styles in their performances.

Join us on February 3, 2025, as we raise the Pan-African flag in honour of Black History Month. Hosted by the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association in partnership with the Town of Newmarket, this ceremony celebrates the rich heritage, culture and invaluable contributions of people of African descent to our community. Gather with community leaders, dignitaries and residents as we recognize the vital role of African Canadians in shaping Newmarket’s cultural tapestry. This event is a poignant reminder of our shared history and collective vision for a brighter, more inclusive future.

One Day Only -- Back by popular demand, the Ujamaa Black-Owned Marketplace brings together some of York Region's  top Black entrepreneurs under one roof. From books to cakes, clothing to art this is a great opportunity to shop while supporting your local Black owned businesses.

Exhibit Times: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 pm. &  1 to 4 p.m. Elman W. Campbell Museum, 134 Main Street South: Join us in honouring Black History Month at the Elman W. Campbell Museum.                                                                                  
Learn about local Black contributions through a new historical exhibit on early Black pioneers (Henry Hisson, Taylor Tamar, Edward Provost, Henry Thomas Shepherd).

This year's exhibit interpreting the theme, "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now - Telling Our Story, Writing Our History" is a powerful showcase of Black Canadian history and experiences. The talented artists behind the pieces use their unique perspectives and artistic vision to convey the message of reclamation and empowerment.

Unleash your creativity in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. This interactive art session, accompanied by refreshments, allows participants to explore their artistic talents while reflecting on themes of self-determination and community. A professional artist will guide the session, ensuring both beginners and experienced painters can enjoy creating something meaningful.
