Join us at the Centre for Culture and Technology's Coach House for a Monday Night Seminar led by Graduate Research Fellow Cole Armitage: <h4>Indexing Dimensions: Animation and Performance in the Virtual YouTuber Media Mix</h4>Cole Armitage's research investigates the phenomenon of Virtual YouTubers, or “VTubers” – anime-style characters or personas that are brought to life through motion-tracking technology on livestreaming platforms like YouTube or Twitch. He explores VTubing as a form of mediated presence and performance emerging at livestreaming’s encounter with the Japanese anime media mix, and focuses on the way in which the technological, performative, and labour conditions in which VTubing occurs, from improvisation to unmuted microphones, unsettle and reshape the way that the IP-based personages populating the anime media ecology relate to the performing bodies which bring them to life.

<a href="https://www.cinema.utoronto.ca/people/directories/graduate-students/cole-armitage" title="https://www.cinema.utoronto.ca/people/directories/graduate-students/cole-armitage" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cole Armitage</a> is a PhD candidate at the Cinema Studies Institute and a graduate research fellow at the Centre for Culture and Technology. Cole’s research interests include animation theory, media theory, transmedia studies, and fan studies. Cole previously received his Bachelor’s Degree in Media Studies from Trent University and his Master’s Degree in Film Studies from Concordia University, where he published his MA thesis entitled “Destabilizing Animation: Structures of Agency and Uncanny Animacy in Animated Media.” Cole’s work has been shared at conferences, symposia, and guest lectures in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Singapore, including at events such as the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) Annual Conference and the Society for Animation Studies (SAS) Annual Conference.

<h4>About the Centre for Culture and Technology:</h4>The Centre for Culture &amp; Technology is dedicated to theoretical, aesthetic, and critical inquiry into the impacts of contemporary media on our interconnected world. This project is informed by the Centre’s location in the Coach House, a multi-use heritage building that was once Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan’s office and salon on the University of Toronto campus. The Centre draws inspiration from McLuhan’s humanistic intellectual and institutional legacy, continuing his stated goal of “investigation into the psychic and social consequences of technologies”.The Centre promotes the study of media aesthetics in an expanded sense, examining the ways technological media shape contemporary experience by elaborating its histories, its problems, its infrastructures, and its politics. Offering both a setting and a framework, the Centre provides space and programming for scholars working in humanistic media studies across the three campuses of the University of Toronto and in the GTA.
