Making Spaces, Sur Gallery 2020 Mentorship Exhibition

Sur Gallery reopens on October 1st, 2020 with the 2020 Mentorship Exhibition Making Spaces. For a safe and enjoyable experience, we are taking all protocols and health measurements to ensure the continuing health of our community. We will be open by appointment only on Fridays from noon to 6 pm and Saturdays 11 am to 5 pm. The use of masks will be required to enter the gallery. To book an appointment, please email claudia@surgallery.ca. ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONWhat defines or makes a space? With no fixed answer to this question, the exhibition Making Spaces navigates concepts of space, place and site through personal-collective experiences, in order to reflect on how we make spaces and the narratives that emerge. The exhibition features textile, mixed media and architectural installations by emerging artists Ana Luisa Bernárdez Notz, denirée isabel, Michelle Peraza, Camila Salcedo, and Aline Setton. The imagery used by these artist’s references specific landscapes and histories, while exploring a sense of home and belonging. Offering moments of action and contemplation, the works include personal stories of migration, revealing the effects of colonial histories in the Americas. Within the exhibition, portraiture acts as a channel to examine identity through familial lineage, while the usage of facial photo filters broadens the notion by linking them to “identification” preferences.Making Spaces in its virtual platform and its on-site version at Sur Gallery is about creating safe spaces of self-reflection as we cope with dislocation, isolation, and the ongoing task to find, make and carry home within us, a burden many of us bear within diasporas. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from OCAD University. Ana&#x27;s work has been shown in Toronto, Halifax, Berlin, and Caracas, as well as in various online and print publications from Canada and the U.S. Her most recent projects explore body-land ties that are ruptured, paused, and transformed due to migration. denirée isabel is a Venezuelan born, Canadian based artist. Her focus is on exploring textiles through a spatial, interactive, and interdisciplinary lens. Her conceptual practice revolves around the study and reflection of identity, culture, and womanhood. She holds a BFA in Textiles with a minor in Art History from NASCAD and is a graduate of Sheridan College in Textiles. In 2017, denirée was an artist in residence at Harbourfront Centre and has exhibited in Toronto and Halifax. Michelle Peraza is an Ontario based emerging artist of Cuban and Costa Rican descent. As a second-generation female Latin American Canadian painter, she explores Latinx identity through large-scale paintings of individuals close to her, pushing the boundaries of portraiture by depicting those ignored and erased by its history. Michelle holds a BFA in Drawing &amp; Painting as well as a degree in Classical Studies and World Religions from Western University. Venezuelan-born Toronto-based Camila Salcedo is an interdisciplinary artist, activist, and community organizer exploring diverse mediums including performance, video, textiles, and curation. She has a BFA from NSCAD University, 2018. She has exhibited nationally in several galleries, artist-run centers, and festivals including Eye level Artist-Run Centre; articule, the Anna Leonowens Gallery; Nocturne Art at Night, Art in the Open; RiAP (Rencontre International d&#x27;Art Performance de Québec); the Khyber Centre for the Arts; among others, as well as internationally at Proyecto &#x27;ACE in Argentina, and at the Gallery of the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Aline Setton is a Brazilian Toronto-based artist whose practice focuses on painting. Aline has been deeply influenced by the accelerated, compressed, and densely populated urban environment of São Paulo, her hometown. Aline attended the architecture and urbanism program at Escola da Cidade University before moving to Northern California, USA to study studio arts and become a painting apprentice. Aline creates narratives using abstracted fragments of architecture, geographies, and cultural references. She has exhibited in Brazil, Canada, United States, and Portugal. ABOUT THE CURATORKarina Roman Justo is a Toronto-based emerging writer and researcher. She completed her BA in Visual and Critical Studies at OCAD University where she was recipient of the VCS Writing Awards for best essay during three consecutive years. Karina also led the Journal of Visual and Critical Studies. She has published reviews for Senses and Society Journal. Her research focuses on decolonial theory as well as collaborative relationships between human and non-human beings within art practices. Karina is the Mentorship Program Coordinator at Sur Gallery and is the Education Assistant at the Textile Museum of Canada.ABOUT SUR GALLERYSur Gallery is Toronto&#x27;s first gallery space dedicated to the exhibition and critical engagement of contemporary Latin American Art and is a project of LACAP.
