How can we activate hope to address the climate emergency as part of our social work practice in Mi’kma’ki? Part 2: Queering climate justice

This four-part series of lunch &amp; learns aim to support the cultivation of ethical social work practice that integrates an understanding of sustainability and the role of social workers in addressing, mitigating, and adapting to the ongoing climate emergency. Our second session is focused on queering climate justice. The session explores how queerness and queer theory are interconnected to issues of climate justice and adaptation. Queerness exists in nature in multiple ways and it invites an understanding of the world that resists binary approaches common in dominant ways of knowing and being. Approaching climate justice through a queer lens can help us better understand the root issues, act, and find hope and agency in addressing the climate emergency. This session is hosted and facilitated by Tyler Colbourne, Professional Development Consultant with NSCSW. The session will draw from the work of leaders around Turtle Island who speak to the ways climate justice is also an issue of queer justice. Each session will involve a mix of learning through seminar and lecture style format, mixed with engaging discussions and activities to deepen learning and build relationships with other social workers. We welcome any social worker in Nova Scotia who wants to deepen their knowledge, skills, and values around sustainability and climate justice, while activating hope for a better and more just future for all living bein <h3>Series objectives</h3><ul><li>Knowledge: Deeper understanding of the climate emergency and social justice &amp; how they relate to sustainable social work practice. Understanding the difference between passive and active hope in social work practice.</li><li>Skills: Engage in discussions with others around sustainability and how to carry forward this work in their own agency and context. He cares deeply about decolonization and social justice and strives to approach his social work practice through a systems change and relational approach.
