Join us  as we discuss the ways that climate activism has changed during 2020 & what we have to learn from the pandemic as we move forward.

Youth As Agents of Change series continues with this second installation: “The Future of Climate Activism After 2020” on October 22nd at 12pm-1pm via Zoom. 2020 has been largely marked by COVID-19, protest and the climate crisis. While 2019 was a year of massive climate rallies and school strikes, 2020 has radically altered the ways youth and communities gather to advocate for climate action. Join KWIC, Sustainable Trent, Peterborough Youth Empowerment (PYE) and panelists: Malaika Collette, Shaelyn Wabegijig, and Morgal Carl as we discuss the ways that climate activism has changed during 2020 and what we have to learn from the pandemic as we move forward towards effective and positive change. Panelists will share their unique experiences in activism and what steps they hope to see moving forward and invite you to join the conversation with questions, comments, and interactive participation.Register via Eventbrite by October 20 to participate. She is a leading member of Peterborough Youth Empowerment as well as a member of the national organizing group Climate Strike Canada. Malaika has worked collaboratively to organize climate strikes, public forums, teach-ins and presentations to the County and City Council as well as the school boards.Shaelyn Wabegijig (she/her) is an Algonquin youth, Caribou Clan, and her people from Timiskaming First Nation and of European descent. Shaelyn is a Trent University graduate of Indigenous Studies and Philosophy and she currently works to help amplify the voices of Indigenous peoples for social and environmental justice. Shaelyn is the program and outreach coordinator and the project coordinator for a KWIC project called Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 Agenda as well as an activist for justice and is currently one of the 7 young Ontarians, backed by Ecojustice, suing the Government of Ontario for weakening its climate targets. Morgal Carl (he/him) is a student, poet, and political enthusiast with questionable fashion choices working to understand and promote policy changes to address poverty/environmental issues.---Partners:Kawartha World Issues Centre (KWIC) is a grassroots not for profit that has been around in Nogojiwanong-Peterborough for more than 30 years. KWIC connects people to global issues and local initiatives through opportunities that can change how we understand the world and foster equitable and sustainable communities in Peterborough and the Kawartha area. Our three key program areas are Community Education, Youth &amp; In Schools Program and Nurturing Small and Emerging Projects. The group has focused on numerous causes and issues over the past three years, since it was started, ranging from volunteer fairs and coffee houses to climate strikes and public forums. One of PYE’s main focus is on the climate crisis by engaging the public and politicians to create real change. PYE’s goal is to create change within the Peterborough area, by providing opportunities for youth to get involved and addressing local issues as they arise. Sustainable Trent is a student-driven initiative supported by university-wide participation with the purpose of making Trent University, and Nogojiwanong, more environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. We also encourage education and awareness of related issues such as supporting Indigenous/water/land rights in activism events and providing funding for other groups to run events that fit within our mandate of allyship and sustainability. We were created to help students and other members of the Trent community to take action on the issues that are important to them. We operate on a non-hierarchical consensus-based decision-making model. This year we are focusing on climate change, activism, and our large campaign is the Nogojiwanong Solidarity with Unceded Algonquin Territory in support with Kitigan Zibi’s Moose Moratorium on sport hunting.
