The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is an inclusive, non-profit, arts-based society that exists to encourage film making as art, reflecting and challenging our changing cultural landscape through production and exhibition of the Filmmaker.We encourage all levels of membership by providing resources and workshops to increase members’ skills and achieve personal arts-based expression. Through exhibitions and community outreach we will strive to increase the public awareness of the CSIF, its Producing Members and their work.The Mission of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) is to encourage, support and endorse the production and exhibition of film in an artistic, social and cultural context. The CSIF is structured in such a way as to enable filmmakers to learn, develop and practice film making in an environment free from box office pressure, securing integrity and allowing for the development of an indigenous film language.

Before there were Independent Filmmakers… there were Amateurs!

Join us for a screening of amateur films from decades past and around the world. Amateur Movie Day is an international celebration of the history of non-professional filmmaking. Charles Tepperman (University of Calgary) will introduce a program of Canadian and international amateur films. Come enjoy these gems of low- (and no-) budget filmmaking from the 1930s-1970s!This event is sponsored by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. CSIF was founded in 1978 by a collective of twelve filmmakers who saw the growing need for film resources and film equipment on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), also known as Calgary, Alberta. Now over 40 years later we are an integral part of the growing cultural community in Calgary and are excited about new collaborations and opportunities.
