ABOUT PERFORMANCEMarton Robinson will be performing NO LE DIGAS A MI MANO DERECHA LO QUE HACE LA IZQUIERDA (Don’t Tell My Right Hand What the Left Can Do) from 3-4pm at Sur Gallery on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025 for the Demystifying Blackness exhibition. This performance installation is composed of three sequential moments, with the possibility of experiencing the work in various iterations. The first consists of a mural drawn on a black wall with white chalk, that serves as the backdrop of the installation and drawn by the artist prior to the opening of the exhibition. The drawing process is recorded on video. During the performance, the entire drawing is erased leaving only remnants of a chalky grey surface spread throughout the wall. During the final moment, the artist projects the video recording of the mural drawing onto the dusty black wall. The iconography used is that of religious and cultural motifs that allude to Pre-Columbian and African ancestry, offering a connection to place, land, culture, religion, and cultural belonging for the diasporic subject. However, more than a piece that reflects on belonging and identity, this performance video-installation exposes a violent erasure of past and present existence. A time-based process that underlines whitewashing and erasure as systemic and ongoing.The artist cleverly also hints to the ability of individual transformation. A process of regeneration with an acknowledgement and an exposed past to create a new future for defiance. While the work portrays the drawing in the past and in the present, it also serves as a tribute to the act made by the “Left Hand.” ABOUT SUR GALLERYSur Gallery is Toronto's first gallery space dedicated to the exhibition and critical engagement of contemporary Latin American Art and is a project of LACAP.
