Artifact Film Festival Night 1: Feature Presentation – Ovid, New York

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is an inclusive, non-profit, arts-based society that exists to encourage film making as art, reflecting and challenging our changing cultural landscape through production and exhibition of the Filmmaker.We encourage all levels of membership by providing resources and workshops to increase members’ skills and achieve personal arts-based expression. Through exhibitions and community outreach we will strive to increase the public awareness of the CSIF, its Producing Members and their work.The Mission of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) is to encourage, support and endorse the production and exhibition of film in an artistic, social and cultural context. The CSIF is structured in such a way as to enable filmmakers to learn, develop and practice film making in an environment free from box office pressure, securing integrity and allowing for the development of an indigenous film language.

A presentation of the feature film Ovid, New York which was shot on Super 8, 16mm, and 35mm film. The film features seven tales of transformation which poetically reimagine Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and paint a picture of violence and catharsis, anchored in mythical landscapes.In attendance will be director Vito A. Rowlands. Vito has taught in Amsterdam, Brussels, and Copenhagen, as well as at Columbia University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Experimental Film and Media at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and a 16mm film instructor at Mono No Aware in Brooklyn. When the $100 Film Festival was born in 1992, it showcased eight short films on Super 8. The name sprung from the challenge to shoot a short film on four rolls of Super 8 – which tallied to the cost of $100. In following years, the festival dropped the budgetary limit and allowed 16mm film, which shifted the focus from low budget to quality small-format films. Thus, the name was changed to the Artifact Small Format Film Festival in 2017 so as to better represent the festival's role as an international celebration of creative story telling on film.This event is sponsored by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. CSIF was founded in 1978 by a collective of twelve filmmakers who saw the growing need for film resources and film equipment on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), also known as Calgary, Alberta. Now over 40 years later we are an integral part of the growing cultural community in Calgary and are excited about new collaborations and opportunities.
