Artifact Film Festival Night 4: $100 Film Challenge

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is an inclusive, non-profit, arts-based society that exists to encourage film making as art, reflecting and challenging our changing cultural landscape through production and exhibition of the Filmmaker.We encourage all levels of membership by providing resources and workshops to increase members’ skills and achieve personal arts-based expression. Through exhibitions and community outreach we will strive to increase the public awareness of the CSIF, its Producing Members and their work.The Mission of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) is to encourage, support and endorse the production and exhibition of film in an artistic, social and cultural context. The CSIF is structured in such a way as to enable filmmakers to learn, develop and practice film making in an environment free from box office pressure, securing integrity and allowing for the development of an indigenous film language.

Local filmmakers took up the challenge to create a short movie on analog film. Come and see their hard work!

12 short films from our $100 Film Challenge will be screened. These will range in genre from horror, to surreal, to documentary. In addition eight international short films will also be screened which were shot on Super 8 or 16mm.International films include:<ul><li>a film with sound (take three) directed by Josh Weissbach</li><li>Astrov at the Lemonade Stand directed by Veronika Gribanova</li><li>Abgad Hawaz directed by Robin Riad</li><li>Floods Recede to Luxury directed by Kathleen Rugh</li><li>ONLY DARK FROM THE OUTSIDE directed by Eleonora Privitera &amp; Eugenio Pizzorno</li><li>The Scientess directed by Chloe Gordon</li><li>Light, Noise, Smoke, and Light, Noise, Smoke directed by Tomonari Nishikawa</li><li>Surrounded directed by Arne Körner</li></ul> The $100 Film Challenge will feature shorts from: Matt Prazak, Mave Ky, Brody McCracken, Evelina Groll and Natalia Cortes, Paul Brain, Dallas Soonias, Samuel Lawrence, Kainat Javed, Lonni Olson, Denver Johnson, and Gergo Koroknay.Then stick around for our after party!The Artifact Small Format Film Festival (formerly the $100 Film Festival) is Calgary’s only celluloid-based film festival. When the $100 Film Festival was born in 1992, it showcased eight short films on Super 8. The name sprung from the challenge to shoot a short film on four rolls of Super 8 – which tallied to the cost of $100. In following years, the festival dropped the budgetary limit and allowed 16mm film, which shifted the focus from low budget to quality small-format films. Thus, the name was changed to the Artifact Small Format Film Festival in 2017 so as to better represent the festival's role as an international celebration of creative story telling on film.This event is sponsored by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. CSIF was founded in 1978 by a collective of twelve filmmakers who saw the growing need for film resources and film equipment on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), also known as Calgary, Alberta. Now over 40 years later we are an integral part of the growing cultural community in Calgary and are excited about new collaborations and opportunities.
