European Book Club 2020: Eva Sleeps by Francesca Melandri

TheIstituto Italiano di Cultura, Cultural Section of the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto,provides the opportunity for culturalcollaborationbetween Italian and Canadian organizations and individuals, in order to facilitate exchange in the field of theatre, music and cinema. It offers information and logistical support to both Italian and foreign public and private operators interested in Italian cultural events in Canada. The Institute supports initiatives which favour intercultural and multilateral dialogue based on the principles of democracy, reciprocal respect and international solidarity and it is often involved in events organized by other cultural offices of the EU countries.

As part of the European Book Club 2020 series, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto will host an online discussion with Dr. Laura Mosco on the book Eva Sleeps by Francesca Melandri.ABOUT THE BOOKWhat do the lives of Eva and her mother Gerda, from a small village in the northern mountains of Alto Adige (SouthTyrol), have to do with Italian history and politics throughout the XX century? A great deal. Eva Sleeps, Francesca Melandri’s bestseller debut novel, is a captivating story of love, archetypes of patriarchism, resilience and forgiveness, all intertwined with an absorbing and revealing journey into the notion of cultural identity and what constitutes Italy today.DR. LAURA MOSCOM. Laura Mosco (Laurea cum Laude, Università La Sapienza, Rome; MA/PhD, University of Toronto) is an Arts and Humanities Teaching Excellence Award winner, and has been teaching Italian culture and language from 2000. Laura has published on Italian contemporary literature, the concept of resistance in Italy, and the Italian cultural discourse and social media.
