Beyond the Block: A Celebration

Through the life stories of migrants, the Toronto Ward Museum will engage the public in connecting Toronto’s migration stories of the past to current day struggles in order to envision and shape a more just future for migrants. Focusing on personal narratives, the museum will inspire visitors to see themselves in these stories and will work to build bridges between individuals, communities and generations by reflecting on the common themes that have motivated migration to Toronto while recognizing how their lived experiences have and continue to shape the City. Further, the museum will inspire critical reflection and conversation around migration, citizenship and belonging in an age defined by global migration.

Kevin Ramroop is an experimental musician and writer from Scarborough, ON. Borelson is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto. After a multilingual upbringing in central Africa (Gabon,Congo), he went on to spend some years in France before relocating to Canada by himself. His particular music is mostly hip-hop infused, mixed with other music influences (afrofusion/afrobeats, jazz, classical music, etc.). After a mixtape (2014) and an EP (2016), Borelson has released his debut album in May 2020 titled &#x27;As Far As Eye Can See&#x27;, to show the continuous expansion of his universe and vision while giving hope and empowering people. He also directed a docuseries featuring the success stories of immigrants and first-generation Canadians, called &#x27;This FAR&#x27;. 
Borelson has performed at venues and events such as SXSW, Afrochic Ghana (Year Of Return), Afrofest Toronto, Toronto Biennale, Nuit Blanche Scarborough, Tdot Fest, and so on. Waleed Abdulhamid - Multi-instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, producer and film maker, Waleed was born in Sudan. He began performing at the age of 6. In Sudan, Waleed was known for bringing traditional rhythms into popular music. When he left Sudan at age 18, he performed, recorded and toured extensively, appearing at major music festivals in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Oslo as well as in Finland and Iceland. 
He demonstrates his versatility on guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, kirin, darabhuka, marimba, congas, djembe, dumbek and tama and has been invited to perform in festivals and conduct workshops (merging music and movement) in Spain, France, the UK and Portugal. 
Waleed is one of the 12 resident artists at Soulpepper Theatre . He has also played and recorded with David Clayton Thomas, the Motown Legend Band “The Drifters”, Doug Riley, Jackie Richardson, Julie Black, Deborah Cox and Zaki Ibrahim. Waleed is the film director of the awards winning documentary &quot;Let’s Find A Way&quot; and has been music director of a series of shows at the Caliban Arts Theatre (Freedom Live), Inner Stage as well as with various dance companies. He has also composed and produced music for several TV shows as well some main stream movies and is the winner of a &quot;Canada New Pioneer Award&quot; in 2011.Waleed is a Music teacher at Humber College.<h3>MighLoe | <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mighloe/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a></h3>
Mighloe is a Toronto based singer &amp; songwriter. A recent graduate of The Remix Project and SOCAN Incubator, she has been carefully crafting her sound and developing a clear visual identity as she begins to confidently wade into the tumultuous waters of the international music industry. Having performed at venues all over the city of Toronto, the R&amp;B/Soul artist enthrals audiences with smooth and sultry tones. Possessing real depth in her music - Mighloe’s writing juxtaposes an honest innocence with hard-won wisdom and a strong knowledge of self in order to create songs that are at once sensual, world weary and ultimately, hopeful.
After the release of her second EP &quot;PRETTY&quot;, Mighloe has been featured on multiple popular Rnb platforms such as R&amp;B Radar and EscapeTracks. She was recently chosen to perform as part of Flare Magazine&#x27;s &quot;Lillith Flare&quot; concert series, as well as some Toronto Arts platforms which include &quot;Atrscape TO&quot; and &quot;The Rose&quot; Brampton.  Now a member of SOHO House after completing their &quot;OpenHouse&quot; program, Mighloe continues to take up important space in the city&#x27;s art community. A polymath who is actively involved across various forms of creative expression, Mighloe is a special talent that is proving herself one to watch as she begins to emerge on the world stage.

<strong>Harini Vasantharaj </strong>- She is currently in the 11th grade at Agincourt Collegiate Institute. Exactly a year ago she won her school&#x27;s first ever poetry slam and decided that even though she had a long way to go it&#x27;s worth the hard work. Over the last year she made an effort to say yes to anything writing related and that landed her at Stay Golden. She had never felt more in her element and to this day she is so glad she joined. Writing to her has always been a way to express herself whether or not there was an audience.
<strong>Max Zhao</strong> - Max joined Stay Golden in the summer of 2020 as the youth intern, making his way up the corporate ladder through hard work and dedication (as in he was promoted since the guy above him had to quit). Prior to grant writing, professional poetry, and workshop leading, he had experience with 2 dogs, leading school clubs and playing a part in the school councils. His achievements (although limited) include leading a workshop of 30+ people, making $5 in freelance spoken word poetry, and leading D&amp;D campaigns. As a 17-year-old, He is currently studying at Agincourt Collegiate Institute with the tutoring of 10 daily cups of coffee.

<h3>About Block by Block</h3><p>Block by Block is a participatory, multimedia program of the Toronto Ward Museum. It engages young people in the collection and interpretation of oral histories in collaboration with Indigenous and newcomer community members. By training young people to interview residents in their own neighbourhoods about their lived experiences, the program preserves and animates stories of migration, settlement and civic life.</p><p>From 2019-2022, Block by Block is focused on four Toronto neighbourhoods: Agincourt, Parkdale, Regent Park and Victoria Park.
