How can we activate hope to address the climate emergency as part of our social work practice in Mi’kma’ki?  Part 4: Environmental Racism

This 2025 series of lunch &amp; learns inspired by the book <a href="https://nscsw.org/book-review-active-hope" title="https://nscsw.org/book-review-active-hope" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Active Hope</a> aims to support the cultivation of ethical social work practice that integrates an understanding of sustainability and the role of social workers in addressing, mitigating, and adapting to the ongoing climate emergency.Session 4 is focused on A History of Violence: The Legacy of Environmental Racism in Canada with Dr. Ingrid Waldron. Canada was founded on enslavement and dispossession, most exemplified by its assimilationist ideologies and policies, the displacement, subjugation and oppression of Indigenous and Black peoples and cultures, and the expropriation of Indigenous lands. The colonial theft of land and the accumulation of capital have been foundational to Canada’s wealth. In this presentation, Dr. Ingrid Waldron highlights the symbolic and material ways in which the geographies of Indigenous and Black peoples have been characterized by erasure, domination, dehumanization, destruction, dispossession, exploitation, and genocide. She offers a historical overview of cases of environmental racism in Canada and outlines how she has been addressing environmental racism over the last 10 years in partnership with Indigenous and Black communities, and their allies.Each session will involve a mix of learning through seminar and lecture style format, mixed with engaging discussions and activities to deepen learning and build relationships with other social workers. We welcome any social worker in Nova Scotia who wants to deepen their knowledge, skills, and values around sustainability and climate justice, while activating hope for a better and more just future for all living beings. <h3>Series objectives</h3><h4>Knowledge</h4><ul><li>Deeper understanding of the climate emergency, social justice and how environmental racism relate to sustainable social work practice.</li><li>Understanding the difference between passive and active hope in social work practice.</li></ul><ul><li>Attendees will be able to define environmental racism and explain how it manifests in Canada and better understand the health effects of environmental racisms in Indigenous and Black communities.</li></ul><ul><li>Attendees will better understand the projects and actions Dr. Waldron has taken since 2012 to address environmental racism in Canada, including case examples.</li></ul><h4>Skills</h4><ul><li>Engage in discussions with others around sustainability, environmental racism, and how to carry forward this work in their own agency and context.</li><li>Identifying actions of hope within ourselves and each other that we can implement or develop to address the climate emergency.</li></ul><h4>Values</h4><ul><li>Shifts in feelings and attitudes around the climate emergency and environmental racism, and social workers role in creating and sustaining hope in addressing the climate emergency.</li></ul> <h3>Speakers</h3>Dr. Ingrid Waldron is Professor and HOPE Chair in Peace and Health in the Global Peace and Social Justice Program in the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University. She is the leading scholar, researcher and voice on environmental racism in Canada. She co-developed with former Liberal MP Lenore Zann a National Strategy Respecting Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice (Bill C-226), the first federal private members bill, which became Canada’s first environmental justice law/legislation on June 20, 2024. Her scholarship and advocacy also focus on climate justice in Black and other racialized communities, mental illness and dementia in Black communities, and COVID-19 in Black and South Asian communities. Ingrid is the author of the book There’s Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities, which was turned into a 2020 Netflix documentary of the same name and was co-produced by Waldron, actor Elliot Page, and Ian Daniel. She is the founder and Director of the Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities and Community Health Project.
