Sashiko (刺し子) is a traditional Japanese form of decorative reinforcement stitching, which literally means “little stabs” or “little pierce.” Originally developed in rural Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868), Sashiko was both a practical and aesthetic craft used primarily by working-class families.Sashiko started as a functional embroidery technique. Farmers and fishermen would layer fabrics and stitch them together with simple running stitches to:<ul><li>Reinforce worn-out clothes</li><li>Repair holes and extend garment life</li><li>Insulate fabric for warmth</li><li>Save materials through recycling</li></ul>It was sustainability before sustainability became a buzzword.Though practical, Sashiko evolved into an artistic expression. It’s known for its:<ul><li>Geometric patterns: Grids, waves (seigaiha), hemp leaves (asanoha), interlocking circles (shippō), etc.</li><li>Contrasting colors: Traditional Sashiko is often white cotton thread on deep indigo-dyed fabric.</li><li>Repetitive, meditative designs: The rhythmic stitching creates a zen-like experience for the maker.</li></ul><ul><li>Thread: Thick white cotton Sashiko thread (not embroidery floss—no sheen).</li><li>Needles: Long, strong Sashiko needles with a small eye.</li><li>Thimble: Often worn on the palm, not the finger, to push the needle through tough fabric.</li><li>Fabric: Traditionally indigo-dyed cotton, but modern artists experiment with linen, denim, and more.</li></ul>
