Join the Art Gallery of Mississauga online for an engaging artist talk featuring Joi T. Arcand, Insoon Ha, Baljit Singh, and James Webb, some of the artists behind the captivating works in My Mother's Tongue, which is curated by the AGM TD Programming Curator, Musha Meluheni.Moderated by Hibah Mian, this conversation will offer insights into their artistic practices and explore themes like language, incarceration, and exploitation in their artwork.Registration is required. All are welcome to join! This special event is generously funded by TD Bank Group, Rama Gaming House Mississauga and Charitable Gaming Community Good. ARTIST BIOGRAPHIESJoi T. Arcand is from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan, Treaty 6 Territory, and currently resides in Ottawa, Ontario. Recent solo exhibitions include Central Art Garage, Ottawa, ON; College Art Galleries, Saskatoon, SK; ODD Gallery, Dawson City, Yukon; Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon; and Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including Àbadakone at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, ON; and INSURGENCE / RESURGENCE at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. In 2018, Arcand was shortlisted for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. She received her BFA with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, and she recently completed a degree in nêhiyawêwin from the University nuhelotʼįne thaiyotsʼį nistameyimâkanak Blue Quills. She is a member of the art and curatorial collective, Wolf Babe. Seoul-born and currently based in Toronto, Canada, Insoon Ha is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, performance, photography, and video. Her work has been exhibited at prominent institutions such as the Art Gallery of Guelph; the Whanki Museum in Seoul, Korea; La Centrale Gallery, Montreal; Latitude 53, Edmonton; CEPA Gallery, Buffalo; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; A Space Gallery, Toronto; the McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton; and the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo. Ha holds both a BFA and MFA in Sculpture from the University of Seoul and an additional MFA in Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her practice has been supported by numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council. Mohau Modisakeng is a South African multimedia artist who lives and works between Johannesburg and Cape Town. His work focuses on the divides that plague post-Apartheid South Africa and the militarization of society that has been born out of post-Apartheid and postcolonial Africa. His video Inzilo (2014) looks at the slow erosion of a man who is going through the ritual of mourning. Inzilo is an iziZulu word for mourning or fasting. The dark ash that falls from his body represents the disillusionment of self, based upon the legacy of Apartheid that still haunts South Africa to this day. Having been silenced for over a century by Apartheid law, much of South Africa’s cultural tapestry is lost in the shadows of a revisionist history. Inzilo is as much a private ceremony as it is a public declaration of what plagues the country’s society. Baljit Singh is an analogue photographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Mississauga, Canada, whose work spans a spectrum from glossy editorials to intimate documentaries. She co-founded the creative agency and production company The Kollective with her creative business partner Kiran Rai. As a versatile artist, she extends her talents to video work, graphic design, and writing, taking inspiration from old family albums and stories of resilience from her community. She has participated in international exhibitions in Toronto, London, and California. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, including Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Toronto Life, Globe and Mail, Elle, Flare Magazine, National Post, The New Republic, Huffington Post, Complex, and The Fader. James Webb grew up in South Africa and voted in the first democratic elections in the country in 1994, following which he completed a degree in Comparative Religion at the University of Cape Town. He has exhibited his work at prominent institutions worldwide. Solo exhibitions include Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden; the Art Institute of Chicago, USA; Galerie Imane Farès, Paris, France; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, United Kingdom; Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen, Norway; CentroCentro, Madrid, Spain; Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa; and mac, Birmingham, United Kingdom; among others. Major group exhibitions include 3rd Monheim Triennale, 1st Islamic Arts Biennale, 14th MONA FOMA, Tasmania, the 8th and 16th Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, 13th Biennial of Dakar, 4th Prospect Triennial of New Orleans, Documenta 14, 13th Biennial of Sharjah, 12th Bienal de la Habana, and the 55th Venice Biennale. Webb currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
