Information session featuring Indigenous teachings of Turtle Island, followed by discussion of decolonizing academic practices and space

Description:Join us on February 12th from 12 - 2 PM for an educational session facilitated by the ALP instructor at the Mi&#x27;kmaw Native Friendship Centre, Tammy Williams (Mi&#x27;kmaw). Throughout this session, we will discuss teachings from various Indigenous worldviews of Turtle Island and discover how we can use these teachings to decolonize academic learning practices and space. We will expolore the term decolonization and reflect on ways educators can improve their relations with Indigenous and international students through sharing knowledge, experiences, and allyship. This gathering will also feature prayer facilitated by Elder Thomas Christmas. Sign-up for this event and be automatically entered to win 1 of 5 gift cards from an Indigenous business!Faciliator: Tammy Williams is a Mi’kmaw Grandmother residing in Kjipuktuk and completing her MA degree in Women &amp; Gender Studies at Saint Mary’s University. Tammy’s research focuses on decolonization, Indigenous research methodologies, and matriarchal/matrilineal societies. She has been teaching culture, life skills and work-readiness skills for over 20 years and is now the Adult Learning Program coordinator and teacher at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre. Tammy will be pursuing an Interdisciplinary PhD after completing her MA in 2021.
