Home Game Toronto Loves Basketball

Home Game chronicles the love story between a city and a sport. Even before the Toronto Raptors and the rallying cry “We the North”, basketball in Toronto was deeply rooted in the evolving social and cultural conditions of our city and its people.

<h3>About the Event</h3><p>Experience Home Game: Toronto Loves Basketball through the eyes of the curators in this special guided tour.<br>Led by Museum of Toronto curators and special guest Sarah Bay-Cheng and Perry King, the tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the stories, artifacts, and community histories that make up Toronto’s love affair with basketball.<br>From grassroots courts to Raptors glory, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for how the sport has shaped and been shaped by our city.</p>

<p><strong><strong>About the Co-Curators</strong></strong><br><strong><strong>Sarah Bay-Cheng</strong></strong>, PhD is Professor at the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto. She is an Adjunct Professor and former Dean at the Theatre &amp; Performance Studies at York University’s School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD). Bay-Cheng served as Chair of Theater and Dance at Bowdoin College and as the Founding Director for the Techne Institute for the Arts and Emerging Technologies at the University at Buffalo. In 2015, Bay-Cheng was a Fulbright Scholar in Media and Cultural Studies at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.</p><p><br><strong><strong>Perry King</strong></strong> is an author, freelance journalist and communications strategist currently based in Toronto. With a literary focus on sports, education, history and urbanism, King has bylines with Sportsnet, the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, The Narwhal, Spacing Magazine and BBC, among other places. His debut book, Rebound: Sports, Community and the Inclusive City, was published in 2021 by Coach House Books.</p>

<h3>About the Exhibition<br></h3><p>Basketball is more than a game, it’s a culture, a community, and a story deeply rooted in Toronto. <a href="https://museumoftoronto.com/collection/home-game-exhibition/" title="https://museumoftoronto.com/collection/home-game-exhibition/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Home Game: Toronto Loves Basketball </a>is the Museum of Toronto’s latest exhibition, celebrating the city’s love affair with the sport. From grassroots courts to global stardom, it traces how basketball shaped and was shaped by the people who play it, support it, and live it every day.<br>Spanning decades of local history, Home Game highlights community leaders, underground legends, and pivotal moments that built Toronto’s basketball identity. It’s a celebration of a city where the game is personal, political, and proudly homegrown.</p>
