Dr. Xander Wang will discuss his work on Mapping the Spatial Patterns of Precipitation in Prince Edward Island

<p>In recent years, farmers in PEI have been experiencing increasingly erratic weather patterns which brought unprecedented challenges to crop production across the island. Many farmers have raised concerns about whether these erratic weather patterns will become a new normal in the future as they are navigating the ways to sustain their agricultural businesses. In particular, local growers are eager to know whether there are some consistent spatial patterns in precipitation across PEI (e.g., dry and wet spots) in support of their agricultural planning for crop selection and irrigation demands. Here we attempt to address this question by using a 1km x 1km high-resolution dataset to map out the spatial patterns of annual, seasonal, and monthly precipitations across PEI. In this presentation, we will focus on the precipitation patterns during the historical period of 1970-2000. The patterns under current and future climate conditions are being investigated and the results will be shared with the public in the near future. </p>

<p>Dr. Xander Wang is the Interim Associate Dean of School of Climate Change and Adaptation at UPEI. He joined UPEI at a tenure-track Assistant Professor in July 2018. Before that, he worked as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in USA. Dr. Wang has over 10 years of teaching and research experiences in climate change modeling, hydrological modeling, flood risk assessment, and climate change impact assessment. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications in the top-tier journals in climate research such as Journal of Climate, Climate Dynamics, Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres, Quarterly Journal of Royal Meteorological Society, etc. Dr. Wang is also the developer and maintainer of many climate software tools, such as Canada Climate Change Data Portal, PEI Climate &amp; Weather App, PEI Storm Surge Early Warning System, and PEI Climate Diary. These tools have been widely used and acknowledged by academia, municipal and provincial agencies, non-government agencies, and private sectors around the world.</p>
