Where do architects have agency? How can we design for positive impact in our current situation? As architects we are asked to respond to an ever-lengthening list of fundamental urgent and contemporary issues related to and outcomes of climate change including natural disasters, ecological destruction, global migration, social inequity and now pandemics. Information on constantly shifting demographics, global economics and production systems; new and emerging construction materials and technologies, sustainable strategies, metrics and tools, and emerging research and awareness of environmental and ecological science are a click away. If past is prologue, the list will continue to grow and much of what we will deal with will not be predictable or within the capacity of architecture to change. However, when, where and how does architecture and the profession have capacity to accommodate and improve lives, not just for today but the future? The history of architecture throughout the modern period was predicated on altruism and sense of urgency to respond to the dire conditions of the world post war. We are a similar period of global crisis right now demanding urgent response. And now, after modernism we have the hindsight and evidence to recognize how seemingly good ideas can go wrong. In this studio, we will address the agency of the architect in the Anthropocene - this period of environmental crisis. Only by understanding the variety of externalities that have determined built form can we begin to propose and test alternatives forms, typologies, processes, politics and strategies and that can help make the built environment not only more accessible, but more responsive to humanity.
