The Burnaby Lake Park Association was founded in 1972* and has been an active volunteer organization leading stewardship activities that preserve, restore, and protect Burnaby Lake Regional Park’s ecological integrity. They connect people with nature through habitat restoration and enhancement such as their invasive species removal program Weedbusters and Nestbox Monitoring, education and outreach in the community. The BLPA is an advocate for environmentally responsible management of Burnaby Lake Regional Park to ensure it is a legacy for future generations. We work in conjunction withMetro Vancouver Regional ParksInterpreters to help people discover the great outdoors!The BLPA acknowledges that our work is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples. <h3>BLPA Guided Nature Walk Using the iNaturalist App</h3>Have you ever gone for a walk in the park and saw a pretty flower or cool bug and you wondered what it is? Join the BLPA for a guided nature walk using the iNaturalist app and get connected to the nature around you!<h4>What is iNaturalist?</h4><ul><li>It is one of the world’s most popular nature apps</li><li>It helps you identify the plants and animals around you.</li><li>It connects you to a community off over a million citizen scientists and naturalists who can help you learn more about nature!</li><li>By recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature.</li></ul>Your BLPA Guide will review how to make an observation using the app and offer tips and tricks to get the best identification for your nature encounters and keep track of them.After the introduction, we will go out into the park so you can use the app right away.<h3>Please download the iNaturalist app before the event</h3><ul><li>DOWNLOAD the iNaturalist app to the device you will take to the park AND</li><li>CREATE AN ACCOUNT ahead of time.</li></ul>There is no wi-fi at the park and depending on how your device is set up, you may need your Apple ID or Android Galaxy Store ID. While iNaturalist will be our focus for this event, you can also download the Merlin app to help you with bird ID. You may need to park along Piper Avenue or at Warner Loat Park right off of Winston which is a 450 m/5 minute walk to the Nature House.
