The Mourning After: Supporting the Complexities of Grieving

A workshop to help practitioners support individuals, families and communities who are grieving.

A two-day workshop for social workers, focusing upon: <ol><li>Contextualizing our current regional grief landscape: micro, mezzo and macro lenses;</li><li>Applying a family-centred approach; </li><li>Complicating factors to grief and bereavement, </li><li>Applying clinical skills; </li><li>Supporting a social justice and advocacy lens for grief; and </li><li>Next steps for Nova Scotia.</li></ol>Sessions are 8:30 a.m to 12:00 noon, on Wednesday June 23 &amp; Thursday June 24. Participants are encouraged to attend both days of the workshop.This event provided for members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers.<h2>Workshop facilitator: Serena Lewis </h2>Serena (she/her) lives and works in rural Nova Scotia, in Mi&#x27;kma&#x27;ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi&#x27;kmaq. She is a proud mother of two sons, one dog and is also a registered social worker.Serena has had the professional privilege of working within mental health (seniors and adult), federal corrections (with women incarcerated), SchoolsPlus, Labour and Advanced Education as well as within hospice and the health care system. She is passionate about community practice, in all of the ways we engage in a sense of community.As a member of the Canadian Grief Alliance, Serena believes that within a resourced and diverse country, our lives and also our deaths matter. Elevating the intersectionality of the bereaved, she is a strong advocate to elevate grief literacy. She is also a local, national and international facilitator on the topics of dying, death and grief.
