How do you know the seasons are changing? Brittany Luby explores the answer with Anishinaabe knowledge systems. For ages 10-14+.

During this workshop, Brittany Luby, author of Mi maanda ezhi-gkendmaanh / This Is How I Know, will introduce the Anishinaabe concept of “all my relations.” Participants will be asked to consider their connections to local flora (plants) and fauna (animals). After a short discussion, Luby will read a passage from the English language text of This Is How I Know. Participants will then share what animal migrations can teach us about changing seasons, but also climate change. To close, participants will be invited to monitor their environments using pen, paper, and a smartphone. Participants are encouraged to download the Seek by iNaturalist app onto their smartphone before the event.

<h3>About the facilitator</h3>Brittany Luby, of Anishinaabe descent, was raised on Treaty #3 Lands in what is now known as northwestern Ontario. She is an assistant professor of history at the University of Guelph and an award-winning researcher who seeks to stimulate public discussion of Indigenous issues through her work. Her debut picture book, Encounter, illustrated by Michaela Goade, received wide acclaim. Brittany currently lives on Dish with One Spoon Territory.

<h3>About the book</h3>In this lyrical story-poem, written in Anishinaabemowin and English, a child and grandmother explore their surroundings, taking pleasure in the familiar sights that each new season brings.We accompany them through warm summer days full of wildflowers, bees and blueberries, then fall, when bears feast before hibernation and forest mushrooms are ripe for harvest.
