This workshop will explore ethical considerations pertinent to social work practice with people who experience/live with suicidal thoughts.

DESCRIPTIONThis workshop will explore ethical considerations pertinent to social work practice with people who experience or live with suicidal thoughts and behaviours, including suicide attempts and acute and chronic suicidal ideation. Through interactive discussion and a review the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, we will identify ethical standards relevant to suicide, discuss common ethical scenarios and points of tension, explore ethical decision-making frameworks, and engage in self-assessment of our practice to examine our current alignment with ethical obligations.PRESENTERRebecca L. Sanford, PhD, RCSW is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and Human Service at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Sanford’s research, clinical, and lived experiences inform her approach to practice and her research agenda, primarily in the areas of suicide prevention, exposure to suicide, and suicide bereavement. She provides individual and group interventions for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, and she is involved in community outreach efforts to promote awareness of suicide and to support people impacted by suicide. Her research interests include the impact of exposure to suicide, the suicide bereavement trajectory, disenfranchised grief and ambiguous loss, and the development and dissemination of interventions for people who are bereaved or otherwise impacted by suicide.ZOOMThis event will be delivered on Zoom.
