The Acacia Youth Wellness Wednesday program organized a weekly wellness workshop for youths ages 12-29 to increase awareness about the importance of mental health. Our goal is to help youth gain valuable mental health knowledge that can be applicable in everyday life to achieve a positive mindset.Learning objectives- Impact of racism on mental health and overall health- Addressing racism/discrimination when accessing health care services- Mental health and justice resources Speaker: A.J. Grant-Nicholson is a lawyer with extensive experience in mental health related law, including mental capacity litigation, substitute decision making and mental health related criminal law. A.J. is also a policy advisor and consultant with experience developing large-scale justice programming for marginalized persons.Prior to founding Grant-Nicholson Law, a private law practice and consultancy, A.J. led Mental Health Strategy at Legal Aid Ontario. He has worked with stakeholders in the justice and health sectors to improve access to legal services for persons with mental health and addiction needs across the province. He has helped develop community-based initiatives that provide free legal services, such as a pro bono Wills program for seniors. He also regularly engages in public speaking events, including discussions on the intersection of mental health and race. A.J. received a Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of Toronto and his Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. A.J. has worked on the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Executive Advisory Committee for Mental Health and Justice.
