Each month, the uLethbridge Agri-Food Speaker Series brings producers and researchers together to discuss southern Alberta’s agriculture industry.

Most of us don’t think about the production process for everyday goods – we simply rely on the ready availability of everything from produce to toilet paper. However, the products you take for granted on the shelves at your local grocery store were produced and delivered through a complex network of distribution supply chains.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted these systems, creating challenges for workers, businesses, and consumers. People started to question the reliability and sustainability of this often ignored yet completely indispensable part of our global distribution process.
This concern is particularly relevant in southern Alberta, where supply chains are an integral part of our agri-food industry. Learn about supply chain logistics and sustainability in Canada at the next uLethbridge Agri-Food Summer Series event hosted by Dr. Danny Le Roy on October 26 at 5:30 p.m. This month&#x27;s discussion features uLethbridge researcher Dr. Mehdi Jourabchi and CEO of Economic Development Lethbridge Trevor Lewington.

He received his B.A. (Honours) in Economics in 1992 from Carleton University and his MSc and PhD in Agricultural Economics in (1994 and 2002, respectively) from the University of Guelph. He teaches courses in agricultural systems modeling, commodity marketing, agricultural policy, and micro-economics. The focus of his research is on livestock production, marketing and trade, emerging markets for irrigation water in southern Alberta, and the impact of renewable energy policies on Canadian agriculture. He has been involved in numerous studies involving systems modelling of farms in Canada and assessments of agricultural policy and trade alternatives.Dr. Mehdi JourabchiMehdi Jourabchi (PhD) is a faculty in Operations and Supply Chain Management at the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business. Prior to joining Dhillon in 2020, he was a PhD candidate at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University where he also taught Operations Management, Fundamental of Operations, and Management Information Systems.He successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, “Environmental Goal Misalignment between Logistics Service Providers and Shippers,” on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. The inspiration for his dissertation emerged from an ongoing debate that exposes a gap in the transportation industry about who should pay for greening initiatives – shippers or Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) – the outsource entities shippers employ to manage warehousing, distribution, and transportation of freight. His thesis examines this gap, which reflects a misalignment between the parties’ environmental decision-making processes. His research adds a new perspective to the study of a supplier’s environmental performance assessment, emphasizing conflict resolution in the parties’ accountability for environmental issues in the supply chain. He undertook three studies (one conceptual theory building and two game-theoretic models) to discuss the conditions under which improved LSP-shipper environmental collaboration can be realized within the supply chain. Jourabchi’s thesis provides scholarly insights and practical solutions for the parties involved in the logistics and freight transport sector. His findings are also of interest and value to policy makers who are seeking to align the economic incentives of the transport sector with environmental objectives.Trevor LewingtonTrevor Lewington is the Chief Executive Officer for Economic Development Lethbridge. Together with a 31-member volunteer Board of Directors, Trevor is proud to work with a talented team that develops and delivers initiatives to promote the Lethbridge region as an excellent place to live, work, visit, invest and do business. With over many years of executive management experience in the food processing industry, in addition to living the trials and tribulations of a small business owner combined with additional roles in the public sector, Trevor strives to provide a broad-based perspective and collaborative approach which will enhance initiatives that drive continued economic growth in southern Alberta.
