This talk will be moderated by <a href="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/s-higgins.html" title="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/s-higgins.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. Sabrina Higgins</a>, Director, SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies. ABSTRACTWhat is “public-facing scholarship” and why bother to do it at all? In this talk, Drs. Chelsea Gardner and Sabrina Higgins will discuss their work with the Peopling the Past project and the new edited volume “Ancient Pasts for Modern Audiences.” Specifically, they will address the field of Ancient Mediterranean Studies (“Classics”) and its colonial pasts, and why we, as academics, have a responsibility to make our research widely accessible and inclusive, particularly as we face ever-growing challenges related to the spread of mis- and dis-information.

BIOGRAPHY<a href="https://history.acadiau.ca/faculty/chelsea-gardner.html" title="https://history.acadiau.ca/faculty/chelsea-gardner.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chelsea A.M. Gardner</a> is Associate Professor in the Department of History and Classics at Acadia University. She is an archaeologist working in the Mani Peninsula in southern Greece, where she is the director of the CARTography Project and the Southern Mani Archaeological Project.

MODERATOR BIOGRAPHY<a href="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/s-higgins.html" title="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/s-higgins.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sabrina Higgins</a> is a field archaeologist and art historian cross appointed between the Departments of Global Humanities and Archaeology. Her work is inherently multidisciplinary, intersecting the fields of Late Antique Studies, Archaeology, Religious Studies, Art History, Papyrology, and Gender Studies. At present, her research is largely situated in the field of Marian studies, specifically the ways in which we can use material culture to understand the development and spread of the early cult of the Virgin Mary in Egypt. More broadly, she is also interested in the ways in which art and space interact within Late-Antique Christian religious structures and the manner in which art is used by socially marginalized populations to exert agency. In addition to these research interests, she maintains three active field projects, including the Philae Temple Graffiti Project and The Ibis Hypogeum Graffiti Project, North Abydos (both in Egypt), as well as the excavations of the late antique site at Golemo Gradište in North Macedonia. She is also the co-founder of two digital humanities projects, Peopling the Past and the Digital Mary Project.
