Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training related to social work ethics.

Vicarious trauma & secondary stress

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to preventing and managing vicarious trauma and secondary stress.

This session is for Nova Scotian social workers who are clinical specialists or provisional clinical specialists, and aims to explore the role of clinical supervision in supporting ethical, reflective and client-centred care.Clinical practice can be isolating and lack opportunities for collaboration/consultation. Clinical supervision plays a key role in provision of clinical services, to engage in authentic, open and honest conversation about our “self” in practice, feeling stuck, uncertainty and professional support.This session will explore, through active participation, how supervision can create a space for clinicians to openly discuss insecurities, seek new directions/approaches, and share clinical impressions, and how this kind of reflection helps us to better understand our strengths and areas requiring insight/reflection/training. <h3>Objectives</h3><ul><li>Knowledge: Identify, analyze, and understand the ways clinical supervision can contribute to ethical and equitable clinical social work practice.</li><li>Skills: Apply, integrate, and strengthen self-reflective practices.</li><li>Values: Examine and shift worldviews, assumptions, and beliefs related to the value and importance of clinical supervision.</li></ul><ul><li>Relational: Connect, learn, and practice with other clinical social workers from across Nova Scotia.</li></ul> <h3>Facilitators</h3>Melissa and Errin have been social workers for over 25 years each and have been involved in clinical practice in hospital, school, post-secondary, creative industry, community based and private practice settings. Both Errin and Melissa have independent practices and have recently launched a supervision service for emerging and established Clinical Specialists. <h2>Eligibility</h2>This event is only for RSW-Clinical Specialist members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW). There are no other prerequisites for this session.Our professional development programming is part of our member services funded by annual registration fees.*This is a closed group interactive space with a limited number of tickets.
