Description: TWM is an evidence-based, interactive workshop designed to increase awareness and reduce stigma around mental health, so that leaders are able to better support themselves, and support others.

SFU is committed to fostering a healthy and psychologically safe environment that enables individual and collective well-being for all staff and faculty across the University.

This workshop aims to promote mental health, reduce stigma around mental illness, and create a more supportive work environment.

This accredited workshop, developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, will be delivered by Dawn Barroso, Lead, Well-being Strategy & Initiatives, and members from the Organizational Health & Well-being team.


Participants are expected to attend both half day sessions in order to receive the certificate of completion from the Mental Health Commission of Canada


Course Outline

Module 1 – Mental Health & Stigma

•Explore mental health concepts and the effects of stigma

•Language matters: learn and apply respectful and non-stigmatizing language

Module 2 – Mental Health in the Workplace

•Use the Mental Health Continuum tool to notice changes in your mental health and well-being. Learn what to do at each stage

•Learn about the warning signs of suicide; what you can do and say when helping someone

•Learn about recovery principles and resources

Module 3 – Stress & Resilience

•Explore the impacts of stress on mental health

•Learn and apply the “Big 4” evidence-based coping strategies to deal with stress and increase resilience

•Explore resources for self and others

Module 4 – Supporting your team’s mental health

•Learn how to support employees along the continuum; how to have healthy/supportive conversations

•Learn about duty to inquire, return to work

•Learn how to support self and others after crisis, and apply the AIR tool


Sensitive content: Module 2 includes a 20-30 minute discussion on suicide. We recognize this may be a difficult topic, and we encourage you to do what you need for your well-being, including stepping out of the room if needed to support your needs. Throughout the training, we also encourage self-care in whatever way works best for you
