ABSTRACTThis presentation examines the ways in which history can be approached through comic narratives. In it, the graphic novel Aivali — which will be analyzed in greater detail in this section — serves as a central example. Aivali is a Graphic novel of 450 pages, published in 2014 by Kedros Editions. That work deals with the end of the Greek -Turkish War in Minor Asia (1919-1922) and the population exchange that followed. With the Treaty of Lausanne (1923-1924) the Greek and Turkish governments agreed to the mutual mass expulsion of Asia Minor’s Orthodox Greeks and Muslims from Greece’s territories. As a consequence, about 1.500.000 civilians were forcibly driven out of their homelands on either side of the Aegean.Aivali is a carefully crafted narrative that uses the language and visual codes of comics. Within this work, archival historical research is interwoven with fieldwork—including photography and the collection of materials—as well as family archives.

SPEAKER BIOAntonis Nikolopoulos (<a href="https://1821graphicnovel.gr/en/" title="https://1821graphicnovel.gr/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Soloúp</a>) is a cartoonist and comics creator. He works for several newspapers and magazines in Greece. He also teaches comic art and cartooning in the e-learning program of the National and Kapodistrian Univesity of Athens. He studied Political Science (Panteion University, Athens) and obtained a PhD in Cultural Technology and Communication from the University of the Aegean (Lesvos). His post-doctoral research is on the depiction of the Greek Revolution from the year 1800 to the present day as viewed through the visual arts, prints, comics etc.Soloúp has published 17 books with comics and cartoons as well as a monograph based on his doctoral thesis, “The Greek Comics/ reflections of ideas on comic book pages” (2012, Topos) and more recently the research "Comics and Graphic Novels with GN “Ayvali” as a Guide/ Literature, History and Visual Communication/ Comics in Education" which he co-authored with Evangelia Moula (2025, Dioptra).His first graphic novel “Aivali”(2014, Kedros-2025 Dioptra) received awards for the best comics and best scenario in 2015 Comicdom Athens and the “Coup de Coeur 2016” prize at the 17th “Rendez-vous du Carnet De Voyage Festival” (Clermont Ferrand/France). Until now “Aivali” has been translated into French (Steinkis), Turkish (Istos), English (Somerset Hall Press) and Spanish (Ediciones del oriente y del mediterráneo).His second graphic novel “The Collector/ Six short stories about a bad wolf”– a family story after a divorce negotiating father's alienation from his child – was published in 2018 (Ikaros) while a 3D animation is currently being made based on it. Both “Aivali” and “The Collector” have been exhibited at the Benaki Museum/Athens. His third graphic novel “21-The Greek Revolution” (2021, Ikaros) gained the first place in the H.F.R.I Action for the 200 years since the Revolution and had also exhibited in the National Historical Museum in Athens. "ZORBAS - Green stone of beauty" based on Kazantzakis’ Zorba the Greek is his latest graphic novel project (Dioptra, 2023).

MODERATOR BIOGRAPHY<a href="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" title="http://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/humans/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a> was born in Athens where he lived during his childhood, teenage and college years. At the University of Athens he studied political theory and, inspired by his professors of history, decided to risk all by applying for a graduate degree in Byzantine Studies. This took him to the University of Oxford where he studied Byzantine social and political history. After an interruption of four years dedicated to military service and to teaching at the American College of Greece in Athens, he moved to the US and the University of Michigan for his doctorate. Upon graduation he joined the faculty at Simon Fraser University where he works at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies.
