Equity in Action: Building and Sustaining Effective Equity Working Groups

We're a national, bilingual charity that works with and on behalf of Canada's charities, nonprofits, and social entrepreneurs to create an operating environment in which social good can thrive. We believe in a stronger Canada where charities work together, alongside business and government, to build vibrant communities. This workshop will help organizations explore how to establish &amp; sustain equity working groups that are both strategic and grounded in care.

What does it take to create an equity working group that drives meaningful, lasting change - not just another committee that loses momentum?In this workshop, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/saltwaterconsultinggroup/" title="https://www.linkedin.com/company/saltwaterconsultinggroup/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Saltwater Learning and Consulting Group</a> will introduce<a href="" title="https://imaginecanada.ca/en/research/equity-guides" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Building Together: Equity Working Groups</a>, a practical guide developed for Imagine Canada as part of the Equity Benchmarking Project - a national initiative funded by <a href="https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/about/responsibility-impact/scotiarise.html" title="https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/about/responsibility-impact/scotiarise.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Scotiabank</a>.Drawing on lessons from Canada’s first of its kind national survey of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices in the nonprofit sector, this session will help organizations explore how to establish, resource, and sustain equity working groups that are both strategic and grounded in care.Participants will gain tools and strategies to:<ul><li>Define clear goals and mandates for an equity working group</li><li>Clarify roles, decision-making authority, and accountability structures</li><li>Build a diverse and empowered team with the right skills and perspectives</li><li>Navigate common challenges such as “getting stuck,” managing conflict, or balancing power dynamics</li><li>Foster collaboration, trust, and reflection while avoiding burnout</li></ul>The session will also explore the paradoxes inherent in equity work - like balancing urgency with patience, structure with flexibility, and safety with discomfort - and offer concrete approaches to keep your organization moving forward, even when the work gets hard.This interactive session is ideal for nonprofit and charitable leaders, staff, and equity practitioners who are looking to start or strengthen an equity working group and embed EDI principles more deeply across their organizations.
