<h3>Projection d'extraits de film et annotation en direct : Chung Kuo, China d’Antonioni (1972)</h3> Cette présentation revisite l’héritage visuel controversé du documentaire Chung Kuo, Cina (1972) réalisé par Michelangelo Antonioni, en le replaçant au sein d’un réseau élargi d’échanges et de rencontres à l’époque de la guerre froide entre les cinéastes occidentaux et une République populaire de Chine à l'image méticuleusement élaborée. En établissant des parallèles entre la visite officielle d’Antonioni et les projets de Shirley MacLaine, de Jean Painlevé, et des cinéastes canadiens Donald McWilliams et Marcel Carrière, Xin Zhou illustre comment ces invités étrangers ont traversé une expérience documentaire préformatée où s’entremêlaient fascination, désorientation et curiosité politique. En contraste avec ces regards extérieurs, la présentation examine également les vidéos scientifiques et éducatifs réalisées par l’État durant les années 1960 et 1970, lesquelles véhiculaient bien plus qu'un simple enseignement didactique des promesses socialistes. L'enchevêtrement de ces histoires visuelles révèlent des frontières mouvantes entre l’auto-représentation dirigée par l’État et les interprétations cinématographiques étrangères, tout en mettant en lumière un paysage médiatique ayant largement disparu aujourd’hui. Les traces qui en demeurent sont ici réactivées sous la forme d’une excavation rétro-prospective menée par Xin Zhou. Cet événement sera présenté en anglais et est gratuit. Xin Zhou est doctorant en études cinématographiques et audiovisuelles à l’Université Concordia. Ses recherches portent sur les vidéos scientifiques et éducatives financées par l’État depuis la Chine socialiste, avec un intérêt particulier pour la collecte, le catalogage, la numérisation et l’interprétation critique de ces matériaux abandonnés. Plus récemment, il s’est intéressé aux résidus des médias socialistes et à leurs rapports inattendus avec les économies circulaires du film analogique et de la production agricole dans les zones rurales de Chine. Il a écrit pour ArtReview Asia, The Brooklyn Rail, Film Comment et Frieze. Il a également commissarié des programmes de projections à Anthology Film Archives, ICA Boston, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art en Corée et l’Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, entre autres. -----<h3>Screening of film excerpts and live annotation: Antonioni’s Chung Kuo, China (1972)</h3><h3> </h3>This talk revisits the contested visual legacy of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1972 documentary Chung Kuo, Cina by placing it within a broader network of Cold War–era encounters between Western filmmakers and a carefully stage-managed People’s Republic of China. Connecting Antonioni’s state-sanctioned visit with projects by Shirley MacLaine, Jean Painlevé, and Canadian filmmakers Donald McWilliams and Marcel Carrière, it shows how foreign guests navigated a pre-packaged documentary experience that blended fascination, disorientation, and political curiosity. In contrast to these outsider perspectives, the talk also examines China’s own 1960s–70s state-produced scientific and educational films, which conveyed more than a didactic instruction of socialist promises. Together, these intertwined visual histories reveal shifting boundaries between state-directed self-representation and foreign interpretation, while revealing a media landscape that has largely disappeared. The traces that remain are recycled here as a form of retro-prospective media excavation by Xin Zhou. This event will be presented in English and is free of charge. Xin Zhou is a PhD student in Film and Moving Image Studies at Concordia University. His research focuses on state-sponsored science and education films from socialist China onward, with an emphasis on collecting, cataloguing, digitizing, and critically interpreting these discarded materials. More recently, he has examined the residues of socialist media and their unexpected intersections with the circular economies of analog film and agricultural production in China’s rural hinterlands. He has written for ArtReview Asia, The Brooklyn Rail, Film Comment and Frieze, and has curated screening programs at Anthology Film Archives, ICA Boston, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, among others.
