Cover Cropping: A Virtual Meet the Farmer Q&A

The BC Climate Agri-Solutions Fund (CAF) provides funding to help farmers tackle climate change by adopting beneficial managing practices (BMPs) in three specific areas: Nitrogen Management, Cover Cropping and Rotational Grazing. CAF is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the On-Farm Climate Action Fund and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.

Join us for a virtual Meet the Farmer event focused on cover cropping and soil health, featuring Cropthorne Farm. This session will share a virtual farm tour captured in late fall with farmer Lydia Ryall, highlighting how cover crops are used within an organic vegetable system.Cover cropping is a key beneficial management practice for building healthy, resilient soils. When thoughtfully selected and managed, cover crops can improve soil structure and organic matter, enhance nutrient cycling, reduce compaction and erosion, suppress weeds, and support biodiversity on the farm.Following the virtual tour, participants will hear from April Stainby of Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, who will share insights from their over-cropping demonstration trials.The event will conclude with an interactive Q&amp;A, and farmers are encouraged to bring their questions.<h3>About the Farm</h3><a href="https://cropthornefarm.com/" title="https://cropthornefarm.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cropthorne Farm</a> is a family-run Certified Organic farm located on Westham Island in the Fraser Delta. Farming 24 acres of mixed vegetables and cover crops, the team focuses on building healthy, living soils through crop rotation, compost, and reduced compaction. Deeply committed to ecology and biodiversity, Cropthorne integrates hedgerows, flowering plants, and wildlife habitat into their farm system, while continually learning and refining their practices through observation, collaboration, and research.<h3>Guest Speakers and Q&amp;A</h3>Lydia Ryall Lydia is the owner and head farmer at Cropthorne and has always had a passion for farming. She obtained her BSc in Agriculture out on the prairies. After a few years of working in ag throughout Alberta and BC, she moved back to her hometown to start her own farm in 2009. In 2014, she won BC’s Outstanding Young Farmer award. She is currently involved with the Delta Farmers Institute and sits on the Agricultural Advisory Committee for the City of Delta and Metro Vancouver.April Stainsby April is a program coordinator with the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust where she assists with the delivery of DFWT’s stewardship programs and is involved with on-farm research projects, field and waterfowl monitoring, and community outreach.This webinar is funded by the Climate Agri-Solutions Fund.
