Collage Party with Ehiko Odeh, Opaloma, & Gelinas Dental Studio

EAST ROOMToronto, ON
Monday, Apr 27 from 7 pm to 10 pm
Overview

Made for a night out, this event features a "fireside chat", a collage making workshop, snacks, drinks and good vibes.

What's better than an art party? Join us on Monday, April 27 for a Collage Party with Ehiko Odeh, presented by Issues Magazine Shop, Opaloma, and Gelinas Dental Studio.

Doors at 7PM / Panel and workshop starts at 7:30PM / East Room at 50 Carroll Street / Wine by Grape Witches / Snacks by Pasta Forever

These workshops are different than our intimate, in-store experiences. (Sidebar: Those are amazing and we seriously suggest you attend one.) But these are built for a night out with friends. Pull up a seat at our art table. Sip on a glass on wine, while our artist host tells you about the magic of collage—and how they weave it into their practice. Get messy as you cut and paste your way to your own masterpiece.

Collage is a practice that pulls together different materials —often discarded or scrap paper—to make a new whole. It's one of the most accessible forms of art making. It's more about the experience of doing than it is about the final outcome. Collage has a tendency to evolve and morph in unexpected ways.

As part of the evening's programming there will be a "fireside chat" featuring Ehiko, Dr. Andrea Gelinas of Gelinas Dental Studio, and Nicola Hamilton, the founder of Issues – the discussion will be hosted by Odessa Paloma Parker of Opaloma. The group will discuss the intersection of fashion and visual art, and how they each help build and support Toronto's creative community.

Meet our artist host:

Ehiko Odeh is a multidisciplinary artist from Lagos, Nigeria, her process is rooted in material transformation to evoke a sense of haze, ambiguity, bridging the organic with the archival as a mode of adaptation. Her work engages family history, food security, and coiffure as reflections of economic change, while investigating globalization, ecology, herbology, and the poetics of space.

Ehiko holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a minor in Creative Writing from OCAD University.

All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own clippings, photographs, or textures to incorporate into your work.

Important:

Each ticket includes access to the panel, a 2-hour collage workshop, all the snacks you can eat and a splash of wine at entry.

Grape Witches will be pouring additional drinks for purchase.

Tickets are non-refundable and any updates will be communicated to you as early as possible.

About Issues Magazine Shop:

Issues Magazine Shop is an independent magazine retailer founded by Nicola Hamilton. Issues is a clubhouse, a gathering place for magazine lovers, and what we hope will be a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and a new generation of independent media in Canada. Find us online at issuesmagshop.com or @issuesmagshop.

About Our Collage Workshops:

When Issues Magazine Shop first opened, we realized we'd be making a significant amount of paper waste each month. Some of our distributors require us to remove out-of-date magazines from our shelves, rip the cover off, and destroy the remains. We figure making art with them is destroying them. Since 2023, we've been hosting regular, in-store workshops with Alanna Chelmick. These are intimate, grounding and a true joy to experience. We put on larger events we're calling Collage Parties. These are made for a night out: There's an artist talk, art making, snacks, drinks and good vibes.

We also love hosting collage workshops for private or corporate groups! For more details on booking those email hello@issuesmagshop.com.
