Before seed companies existed, gardeners around the world saved seeds from their crops to grow on the following season. New varieties grew out of careful selection of the best of the crop and were shared with fellow gardeners. The diversity of colour, shape, taste and use of each type of edible crop was astonishing.
This workshop will cover all aspects of seed saving, whether you are wishing to create new varieties or simply to be seed self-sufficient. Topics include:
- Types of seeds, and which ones are best for saving
- Process of seed saving
- Conditions for seeds to be harvested
- How to save wet seeds
- How to save dry seeds
- Storing seeds
- What we can use seeds for in the winter months
Hands-On Activities:
- Practice saving dry and wet seeds
- Make pine cone bird feeders
- Sow microgreens to grow indoors
Save seeds, grow food, and keep the gardening cycle going all year long! 🌱
