REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities is committed to providing knowledgeable, practical solutions for working with vulnerable people and diverse populations. <h3>Who is it for?</h3>This training is designed for professionals, including but not limited to: social service workers, peer support workers, first responders, educators, law enforcement officers, supervisors, managers, and directors working in the social service, education, or healthcare sectors. Interactive Online Training: While this session will be held online, we intend to create an interactive learning space.Cost: Free (the cost to participants is highly subsidized by REACH Edmonton)*The webinar link will be sent to participants a few days prior to the day. <h3>Supporting Your Muslim Clients</h3>Join us to learn essential aspects of Islam and Muslims to support your culturally sensitive care of diverse Muslim clientele. Areas of discussion will include an overview of Islam and Muslims with an emphasis on Edmonton’s Muslim demographics and contemporary issues affecting the community.Participants will:<ul><li>Gain a foundational understanding of Islamic beliefs, values, and cultural perspectives</li><li>Learn about Muslim demographics and current social issues in Edmonton</li><li>Explore effective approaches for supporting Muslim clients based on lived experience and research</li><li>Develop practical cultural competencies through guided lessons and case studies</li></ul>The knowledge gained in this session will help participants provide more thoughtful, informed, and compassionate support to Muslim clients while strengthening their overall capacity to work across cultures. This webinar is Part 1 of a two-part series. Participants are encouraged to continue their learning later this year by attending Counselling Muslims, which will explore the spiritual, psychological, and cultural frameworks that intersect with Muslim clients’ mental health and counselling needs. <h3>About the Facilitator:</h3>Ibrahim Long, MSW, MA, is a registered social worker, professional chaplain, and youth counsellor dedicated to advancing mental health and well-being through spiritually and culturally responsive practice. With over a decade of experience in educational, healthcare, and community settings, he provides counselling, training, and consultation that help professionals better support the religious, cultural, and mental health needs of Muslim clients and communities.His work focuses on bridging social work, spiritual care, and intercultural understanding to strengthen culturally sensitive care. His publications appear in the Journal of Muslim Mental Health, the Journal of Pastoral Care &amp; Counseling, and in edited volumes such as Mantle of Mercy: Islamic Chaplaincy in North America. He currently serves as Youth Wellness Manager at IslamicFamily (IFSSA) in Edmonton, where he provides spiritually integrated counselling and leads initiatives that support the mental health and well-being of Muslim youth in the community.
