Based in Little Burgundy and serving participants across Greater Montreal, DESTA is a non-profit organization that empowers Black youth between the ages of 18 to 35 to reach their educational, employability, and entrepreneurial goals through a holistic and individualized approach.

Desta presents a screening of Stefan Verna’s film Night Watches Us with the National Film Board of Canada.

3007 Rue Delisle

On August 21, 2018, a son lost his father, a mother lost her son and a nephew lost his uncle. The community knows what happened. Flowers bloom where Nicholas Gibbs last drew breath. He was a 23-year-old Black man plagued by mental health issues but was murdered by the Montreal police. Stefan Verna’s Night Watches Us examines the systemic forces that lead to Nicholas’s tragic death, telling the story through the eyes of his family and community, united in their collective grief. Using a blend of documentary styles mixed with street art and spoken word, this film is a love letter in honour of Nicholas and the Gibbs family. Please join us on May 29, 2026 at Union United Church, when DESTA presents a screening of Stefan Verna’s film Night Watches Us, in conjunction with the National Film Board of Canada. The documentary will start at 7PM, followed by a panel discussion and refreshments.Tickets are free to the community and available through Eventbrite registration.*This film addresses themes of mental health and police brutality.
