Watercolour for Beginners – 4-week online course (4 Thursdays)

This beginner-friendly course is designed to build confidence in watercolour painting through step-by-step instruction, creative exploration, and fun projects.

Your Host

Vancouver-based award-winning painter and educator Tatiana Anisimova is represented by Ian Tan Gallery. Holding an MSc in Biology and extensive training in fine art, she brings a unique blend of scientific observation and artistic expression to her work and teaching. Tatiana has taught students of all levels and is passionate about making watercolour approachable, enjoyable, and accessible for beginners.

Session 1: Foundations of Watercolour

Learn the essential building blocks of successful watercolour painting:

  • Working with a limited colour palette
  • Understanding colour theory for watercolour
  • Exploring paper properties and their impact on painting
  • Developing confidence with brushes and essential brushstrokes
  • Practicing wet-on-dry and wet-on-wet techniques

Project: Create a vibrant sunset painting by combining newly learned techniques with your imagination. 🌅


Session 2: Understanding Light and Water

Discover how objects interact with light and water through observation and painting.

Topics include:

  • Object, reflection, and shadow relationships
  • Creating the illusion of transparency
  • Understanding colour shifts in water

Project: Paint an underwater fish while exploring transparency, reflections, and movement.


Session 3: Expressive Florals with Wet-on-Wet technique

Master one of the most challenging and exciting watercolour techniques.

Topics include:

  • Controlling water and pigment flow
  • Creating soft edges and atmospheric effects
  • Balancing technique with creative expression

Project: Paint a loose, colourful bouquet of flowers using a combination of observation and imagination.


Session 4: Creating a Seasonal Landscape

Bring together everything learned throughout the course.

Topics include:

  • Combining wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques
  • Painting realistic white birch trees
  • Adding animals and other natural elements
  • Choosing colours to create seasonal mood and atmosphere

Project: Design and paint your own seasonal landscape scene inspired by your favourite time of year.


Supply list

  • Watercolour paper 300g/140lb, 11x15in or 11x14in
  • Brushes (medium round, 3/4 flat, other by your choice)
  • Watercolour paint in tubes (3 primary colours: cobalt blue, permanent rose, lemon yellow)
  • Mixing palette (paper palette oe white dish)
  • Paper towels
  • Container for water
  • Pencil & Eraser
