Les jouets au CCA, avec Amanda Zhang

Quelle est la relation entre l’univers des jouets et le CCA ? Entre 1990 et 2000, le CCA a présenté une série d’expositions thématiques à la suite de l’acquisition de plus de 300 jouets et jeux d’archives et d’architecture pour sa collection. Près de 30 ans se sont écoulés depuis la dernière exposition, et l’univers des enfants et des jouets a considérablement évolué. L’importance des technologies numériques au début des années 2000 et le développement récent des réseaux sociaux ont profondément remodelé le paysage de l’enfance. Pourtant, plusieurs des mêmes inquiétudes, espoirs et aspirations concernant les enfants, perçus comme les garants de l’avenir, perdurent d’une génération à l’autre. Cette présentation par Amanda Zhang aborde les jouets comme des outils pédagogiques ainsi que des objets historiques afin d’explorer comment ceux-ci, autant que l’architecture, participent à façonner nos conceptions du monde. Ils offrent un aperçu des idéaux et de l’imaginaire des personnes qui les fabriquent, les utilisent et les collectionnent.

Cette session s’inscrit dans le cadre de la série Vendredi dans la Collection où des invités sont conviés à explorer notre collection à partir d’un mot-clé et à sélectionner une série d’objets qu’ils présenteront dans la salle d’étude pendant un après-midi. À travers des découvertes, attendues ou non, et des récits, ils établissent des liens entre les objets, le public et leurs propres histoires et centres d’intérêt.

What do toys have to do with the CCA? Between 1990 and 2000 the CCA produced a series of thematic exhibitions based on the acquisition of over 300 archival and architectural toys and games to its collections. Nearly 30 years have passed since the last toy exhibition, and the world of children and toys has changed substantially. The outsized impact of digital technology in the new millenium and more recent developments in social media has fundamentally re-shaped the landscape of childhood. Yet many of the same anxieties, hopes, and aspirations for children as stewards of the future remain across generations.This presentation by Amanda Zhang looks at toys as both didactic instruments and historical artifacts to explore how toys—much like architecture—are type of world-building technology that can offer valuable insights into the ideals and imaginaries of the people who make, play with, and collect them.

This event is part of the Friday in the Collection series, where guests are invited to explore our collection with one keyword, and to curate a selection of objects they will present in the study room for one afternoon. Through findings, expected or not, and storytelling, they draw relationships between the objects, the audience and their own stories and interests.
