Alternatives Gallery and Studio

Join us for a hands-on, multimedia workshop that uses art as a tool to reflect on nourishment, rest, and restoration

Alternative Creations Studio

About the workshop:Together, participants will create individual collage panels that become part of a larger collaborative artwork, exploring how we move between states of depletion and renewal through processes of construction, deconstruction, and transformation. Each participant will receive an A3 paper panel and have access to a variety of materials, including oil sticks and collage supplies. Guided by a series of reflective prompts, participants will use colour, shape, texture, movement, and mark-making to express their experiences before transforming and rebuilding their work through cutting, tearing, layering, and reassembling. The workshop will unfolds in four stages:ReflectRespond to the prompt: How do you experience the lack of rest? Participants are invited to think about moments of exhaustion, overwhelm, or imbalance and express these experiences visually through colour, texture, shape, and movement.TransformParticipants will physically alter their artwork by tearing, cutting, rearranging, or reconstructing it, using the creative process as a way of releasing or reshaping those feelings.RestoreGuided by prompts such as ‘what does rest look, feel, sound, or taste like?’ and ‘how do you create space for nourishment?’, participants will rebuild their composition into a visual reflection of restoration, resilience, and care.ShareParticipants will be invited to reflect on their process and, if they wish, share what emerged through the activity and how they hope to carry those insights into their everyday lives.Together, the completed panels will form a collective installation within the exhibition, illustrating the many ways we experience, seek, and cultivate nourishment through rest, creativity, and community. And stay turned for another further transformation of the work on closing night - October 23 | 6-9 PM. About the show:In her Artist in Residence with posAbilities', Georgina Hawitt, explores how rest is an active, creative condition that makes imagination, play, curiosity, and growth possible. Through an interactive landscape embedded with sculptures, paintings and offerings co-created with community, the work reflects on what emerges from conditions of rest - memories, humour, creativity, observation, and acts of rebuilding. The exhibition asks how we carry and disperse weight, how support becomes visible, and whether softness, dependence, and rest might be understood not as weakness, but as the foundations from which we create, connect, and flourish. Visitors are encouraged to sit, lean, hold, or rest among the works, experiencing care as something physical, communal, and reciprocal.
