Discover the Fascinating World of Honeybees

Join local beekeeper Eric Karn, a passionate beekeeper from Southern Ontario, for an engaging and educational look inside the world of honeybees and beekeeping.

Eric will share his personal experiences and enthusiasm for working with bees, offering an up-close look at what it takes to care for a healthy hive. He will introduce participants to the tools and equipment used by beekeepers, including protective clothing, smokers, hive components, frames, and other essential equipment.

The presentation will explore the lifecycle and social structure of the honeybee, from egg and larva to pupa and adult bee, as well as the important roles played by the queen, worker bees, and drones. Eric will explain how bees communicate, collect nectar and pollen, produce honey and beeswax, and work together as a colony.

Participants will also learn about the seasonal life of a honeybee colony in Southern Ontario, including preparing hives for winter, spring buildup, summer honey production, and fall preparations. Eric will discuss how beekeepers monitor colony health, manage pests and diseases, and help their colonies thrive throughout the year.

The presentation will also examine the important ecological role of bees and other pollinators, including pollination, biodiversity, habitat loss, pesticide use, climate and environmental changes, and the challenges facing pollinator populations. Eric will discuss practical ways individuals, families, schools, and communities can create more pollinator-friendly spaces.

Throughout the presentation, Eric will encourage questions and discussion, helping participants better understand both the challenges and rewards of beekeeping. Whether you're curious about starting a hive yourself or simply interested in learning more about one of nature's most remarkable insects, this presentation offers an informative and entertaining introduction to the world of bees.t
