Connected by Water: the Muskoka River Watershed and Your Community

Overview

The Muskoka River Watershed: Why It Matters to Parry Sound and Seguin

What happens in the Muskoka River Watershed affects more than you might think. Join us to learn why.

The Muskoka River Watershed connects communities, lakes, rivers, and landscapes across the region. Its health doesn't stop at municipal boundaries, and understanding how it works is an important part of protecting the places we call home.

Join the Muskoka Watershed Council for a free community event in Seguin to explore the watershed's greatest threats, the work underway to protect it, and what these issues mean for residents of Parry Sound and Seguin.

Hear from environmental experts Peter Sale and Kevin Trimble, who will share their knowledge of watershed health, land-use change, and the environmental pressures facing our region. Following their presentations, take part in an audience Q&A and share your questions and perspectives.

You'll also have the opportunity to meet the Muskoka Watershed Council team, learn about ongoing regional projects, and discover how the health of our watershed connects to the communities around it.

Whether you're a year-round resident, seasonal property owner, or simply care about the region's future, this is an opportunity to learn more about the watershed we share and why its health matters.

Your community is part of this watershed. Come learn what that means.

Meet the Speakers

Peter Sale | Board of Directors, Muskoka Watershed Council
Peter F. Sale is an environmental scientist whose career has taken him from the coral reefs of Australia and the Pacific to the freshwater systems of Ontario, and now to Muskoka, where he calls home.

Over decades of research at the University of Sydney, the University of New Hampshire, the University of Windsor, and the United Nations University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health, Peter built an international reputation for understanding how ecosystems thrive, struggle, and recover.

Now University Professor Emeritus at the University of Windsor, he continues to write and speak urgently about the environmental challenges facing communities like ours. Educated at the University of Toronto and the University of Hawaii, Peter brings a rare combination of global perspective and local commitment to the conversation about Muskoka's watersheds.

Kevin Trimble | Board of Directors, Muskoka Watershed Council
Kevin Trimble has spent more than 25 years examining how changes in land use affect the environment, particularly our land and water systems.

As an ecological consultant, most recently with Golder Associates in Barrie, Kevin has assessed the environmental impacts of land-use change across Ontario, directed restoration projects, and worked at the intersection of aquatic science, water resources, and groundwater systems.

After years of cottaging on Lake Simcoe, Kevin moved his family to Muskoka in 2014. His work brings together an understanding of how our landscapes, surface waters, and groundwater interact, offering valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing our region.
