Work of the Heart, Work of the Hands: Rupert Community Centre Fundraiser
Explore the ancestral tradition of caring for our beloved dead at home through a home vigil demonstration at this in-person fundraiser.
This in-person fundraiser is for people interested in supporting the Rupert Centre and learning about caring for the dead at home.
About the evevt
Through a home vigil demonstration, participants will learn about simple, meaningful acts that can help families and communities take part in caring for someone who has died.
Organized by En Terre Outaouais and led by educator and death doula Kelly Butler of Community Deathcare Ottawa, participants are invited to explore the ancestral tradition of caring for our beloved dead at home. Attendees will learn about simple practices that can help families and communities participate in caring for someone who has died.
We will also address current restrictions on home funerals in Quebec, examining why the province stands apart from much of the rest of Canada and the United States when it comes to family and community participation in after-death care.
The care we offer our loved one at end-of-life is the work of the heart and work of the hands. It is an opportunity to create a space for our grief, to honour the person who has died, and to come together in community for a final farewell.
The suggested donation is $50, with contributions of any amount welcome according to individual financial circumstances. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, although space is limited. A light reception will follow so that we might continue the conversation and connect with others.
The presentation will be in English, but Francophones are welcome to participate in French.

Work of the Heart, Work of the Hands offers an opportunity to learn practical skills, explore a tradition of community care and support a local gathering place, all through a conversation about one of life's most universal experiences.
