The purpose of agricultural research is to expand knowledge and improve technology. Through it, the standard of living we enjoy today incomparably better than of our ancestors. Researchers seek to discover procedures to increase livestock and crop yields, improve farmland productivity, reduce loss due to disease and insects, develop more efficient equipment, and to increase overall food quality and safety. In other words, they look for ways which our ever-changing wants as final consumers can be satisfied more fully and more profitably with regard what is produced, how, where, when, how often, and by whom.Join Dr. Danny Le Roy and panelists Dr. Dena Martin and Dr. Mark Redmond as they discuss the essential roles research institutes and universities play in agriculture on Tuesday November 30th at 5:30pm.On the last Tuesday of every month, the University of Lethbridge will be hosting short timely conversations around Agrifood. He received his B.A. (Honours) in Economics in 1992 from Carleton University and his MSc and PhD in Agricultural Economics in (1994 and 2002, respectively) from the University of Guelph. He teaches courses in agricultural systems modeling, commodity marketing, agricultural policy, and micro-economics. The focus of his research is on livestock production, marketing and trade, emerging markets for irrigation water in southern Alberta, and the impact of renewable energy policies on Canadian agriculture. He has been involved in numerous studies involving systems modelling of farms in Canada and assessments of agricultural policy and trade alternatives.Dr. Dena McMartin Dr. Dena McMartin is an environmental and agricultural engineer, faculty member, and Vice-President (Research) at the University of Lethbridge. Her research focuses on rural, agricultural and industrial water resources management and treatment, as well as impacts of freshwater climate extremes on communities and agri-food production and processing. She is an enthusiastic advocate for research, innovation, scholarship and creative activities and also deeply involved with diversity and inclusion work in academia and STEM.Dr. Mark RedmondDr. Mark Redmond trained as an infectious disease specialist; however, his career has taken him from lab to international markets as CEO of a publically-traded company. Along the way, he transformed ideas into innovation in agriculture and health; and encouraged people to be the best they could be. In March 2021, Mark joined as RDAR - Results Driven Agriculture Research as CEO, leading Alberta's ag research funding in sectors identified by producers as priorities to deliver outcomes of increased competitiveness and profitability - measured at the farm gate.
