A nationally registered charity founded by a group of local changemakers in 1989, The Laurier Institution works with partners to ignite collaboration, deepen shared learning, and inspire action around equity, diversity and inclusion. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization we aim to shift from solutions that meet the needs of the few to those that meet the needs of the many. We draw from our differences and actively involve everyone’s ideas, knowledge, lived experiences, and perspectives to maximize safe and thriving communities.

Reclaiming Power and Place: The Value of Intersectionality in Research and Leadership In this presentation, Dr. Karine Duhamel, Director of Research for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, will share her reflections on the need to think boldly in considering intersectionality in research, public policy and leadership. Drawing on her experiences within the National Inquiry and now, within the public service, this talk will reflect on what safety means, through Indigenous perspectives, and whose voices still need to be heard. About Dr. Karine DuhamelDr. Karine Duhamel is Anishinaabe-Métis. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Manitoba. Dr. Duhamel was Director of Research for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. She is now a public servant focused on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, working to incorporate impact-based research and results into policy development. Dr. Duhamel is also a Fellow at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University and an Affiliate of the Centre for Human Rights Research at the University of Manitoba.
