2026 Mobile Device Filmmaking Workshop

Concordia University of EdmontonEdmonton, AB
Saturday, Mar 14 from 10 am to 3 pm
Overview

Learn essential filmmaking skills with your mobile device in preparation for our annual 48hr Filmmaking Challenge!

Are you a content creator? An emerging filmmaker? Do you want to learn core concepts of filmmaking? This workshop focuses on how to build a compelling story, create complex characters, how to use editing software, and how to produce a script to film, all with your mobile device.

Organized by the Edmonton Short Film Festival, this FREE event is held at Concordia University of Edmonton and targeted towards teaching individuals about the craft of filmmaking and content creation. At 10:00AM, the first class focuses on storytelling and production techniques taught by ESFF Founder and film director Dan Foreman. Attendees will learn what makes a strong story and how to bring it to life visually.

A free lunch will be provided from 12:00PM-1:00PM, giving the attendees the opportunity to mingle and network with others.

The second class runs from 1:00PM-3:00PM and focuses on post-production. Attendees will gain basic knowledge for using editing software to put together video sequences from their captured footage and form a cohesive story.

We have a capacity of 80 available tickets for in-person attendees ($15 refundable deposit). Deadline for in-person registration is March 6! If you are unable to attend or in-person tickets have sold out, we offer a FREE online live-streamed service of the entire event, with subititles, and a capacity of 250 available reservations. Please note that we do not record the event to be viewed later, so you will need to watch live. A link for online registrants will be provided closer to event date.

This educational day prepares all novice and intermediate filmmakers for the FREE 48 Hour Mobile Device Film Challenge on May 22 – 24, 2026. Pre-registered participants will receive preliminary information about the event and then will receive complete details on Friday, May 22 at 6:00 pm. This important email will include full contest rules and the secret elements. Registration details for the Challenge will be coming soon.

Films that meet the criteria for the Challenge will be screened at the Film Expo on Sunday May 31, 2026.
