The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society operates the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Through interactive exhibits and engaging programming, the Discovery Centre showcases the Fraser River’s role in shaping BC’s ecological, cultural and economic diversity. Its mission is to be the Voice of the Fraser in presenting the stories of the Fraser River and their contribution to the life, history and future of British Columbia with the vision of connecting communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser River.

The FRDC is excited to present its next edition of Fraser River Dialogues – Monuments of the Fraser River on Tuesday, January 25th at 7:00pm!Fraser River Dialogues is a panel speaker series hosted by the Fraser River Discovery Centre that engages interested parties on Fraser River issues and opportunities. These panel discussions follow a Q&amp;A format between the Discovery Centre staff and guests, who discuss topics from economic, environmental, and socio-cultural perspectives.The New Westminster Museum &amp; Archives and the Fraser River Discovery Centre have partnered to host “Monuments of the Fraser River”. The panelists will help inform a discussion reflecting on the original intent of these monuments and what they communicate to residents and visitors to the City today.This Dialogue will take place on-line via Zoom and is free of charge, although donations to the Fraser River Discovery Centre are welcome!Panelists include:Elder Larry GrantLarry Grant, Musqueam Elder, was born and raised in Musqueam traditional territory by a traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam family. Elder Grant is an Adjunct Professor in the First Nations and Endangered Languages Program and a consultant for the Musqueam Language and Culture Department, both at the University of British Columbia.Kamala ToddKamala Todd is a Metis-Cree community planner, educator, curator and filmmaker who was born and raised in the beautiful lands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Skwxwú7mesh-speaking people (also known as Vancouver). She has a master’s degree in geography (UBC) and is the City of Vancouver’s first Indigenous arts and culture planner.Kirsten McAllisterKirsten Emiko McAllister is a Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. As a third generation Japanese Canadian she has worked closely with members of her community to examine their use of different media to remember the places they lived before 1942 across BC’s lower mainland followed by the internment camps where the Canadian government rounded them up as part of a larger plan to remove “all people of Japanese descent” from Canada in the 1940s.Madelyn PrevostMadelyn is a Doctoral Candidate at Simon Fraser University studying relationships to place and placemaking activities. Since 2019, she has been working as a Research Assistant on a collaborative project between Simon Fraser University and the New Westminster Museum and Archives on decolonizing New West’s city assets.
