<p></p><p><strong>*Rescheduled Event*</strong></p><p>The <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies</a> and <a href="http://www.sfu.ca/linguistics.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Department of Linguistics</a> at Simon Fraser University are pleased to present professor Panayiotis Pappas.</p><p>On Friday, March 11th, at 2:30  PM PT, join us for their virtual presentation entitled &quot;Dialect Diversity in the Greek of Greek-Canadians,&quot; as part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies&#x27; Spring Seminar Series. </p><p>The event will be moderated by Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies Director, Dimitris Krallis.</p><p>Attendance is free. The event is open to the public and will be recorded.</p><p>This programming is made possible thanks to the generous support of the<a href="https://www.snf.org/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)</a>.</p><h3>Abstract</h3><p>The project <a href="https://immigrec.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Immigrec</a> (Immigration and Language in Canada: Greeks and Greek-Canadians, Anastassiadis et al. 2017), is an interdisciplinary project which aims to document the second wave of Greek immigration to Canada (roughly the period 1945 to 1975) through the collection of oral histories and archival material (travel documents, photographs, etc.). The sample of 453 participants happily includes a large number of dialectal speakers from 10 of the 15 dialect areas of Greece (Trudgill, 2003), and this allows for an examination of Greek dialect features in a sociolinguistic environment that is not dominated by Standard Modern Greek. In this presentation, Professor Pappas will focus on dialectal features that showcase how the speech of Greek Canadians can help us understand the development of Common Modern Greek (Tzitzilis, 2016) in the middle of the 20th century.</p><h3><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Speaker bio</h3><p><a href="https://www.sfu.ca/linguistics/people/faculty/pappas.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Panayiotis Pappas</a> is Professor of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver British Columbia. They received a B.A. from St John’s College in Annapolis MD, and a PhD in Linguistics from Ohio State University. They have also taught as a visiting professor at Texas A&amp;M University and the University of Cyprus. Dr. Pappas’ area of research is language variation and change, mostly within the framework of variationist linguistics and chiefly on the Greek language. Through their student’s work, they have also studied language and ethnicity in Vancouver English. Professor Pappas has also led initiatives focusing on writing in the disciplines, student retention, and the implementation of student evaluation of teaching policies.</p><h3><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Moderator</h3><p>Born and raised in Athens, where he lived until his college years, <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a> studied political theory at the University of Athens and Byzantine History at Oxford and at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his doctorate. He teaches Byzantine history at Simon Fraser University’s Department of Humanities and is the Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies. He is the writer of two books, including, Serving Byzantium&#x27;s Emperors: The Courtly Life and Career of Michael Attaleiates. New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture Series, which was recently translated into Greek. He has also written numerous articles and co-translated the work of a major Byzantine historian, Michael Attaleiates. His research explores the social, political, economic and intellectual history of Byzantium, as well as its modern reception.</p><h3><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Registration</h3><p>Guests can register for the event through Eventbrite. Register early to secure a ticket.</p><p>This event is free and open to the public and will be recorded.</p><h3><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>COVID Protocols</h3><p>Attendees will have the option of participating virtually through Zoom or attending the event in person on SFU&#x27;s Burnaby Campus in AQ 6229, located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.</p><p>Attendees will be required to wear face masks at all times.
