A Hybrid Community Kitchen with Kala from SFU Veggie Lunch!

We’ll be hosting our first ever hybrid Community Kitchen this March 8th, 2022! Let’s say goodbye to winter together with a hearty meal filled with flavour. Kala Roy will be sharing her recipe for “Super Meal” and Naan, which is chock full of healthy grains, proteins, and delish Indian spices. This one-pot meal is perfect to share with vegan and non-vegan friends alike!We’ll also chat about Kala’s cooking principles, building community through intersecting discussions about food as culture, food as connection, and food as communication.A collaborative effort of Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre, Community Kitchens are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as Embark Associate Members. Born and raised in Croatia, she began cooking for her family at the age of 11. She first made the traditional dishes of her homeland, but later became fascinated by culinary traditions from around the world. Her repertoire and influences quickly became very international, with her cooking today depicting the diverse cuisines she has engaged with.Kala&#x27;s passion for cooking has taken her from food regions as distinctive as Bavaria in Germany to Bengal in India. In each place, she has made the effort to study authentic styles of cooking. It was while living in India that Kala met her self-described &quot;cooking mentors&quot; and did most of her training. Over time, she was able to recognize flavours by simply tasting dishes and could recreate them.Settling with her family in Vancouver, she feels at home amongst the diverse people and foods this city has to offer.Kala has been part of the SFU community for over 25 years, involved in SFU’s past Veggie Lunch program. We are grateful to have her share her expertise with us!EVENT ACCESSIBILITYWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. In accordance with Provincial Health Orders, Embark Sustainability staff members will be checking for each participant’s vaccine passport. Participants who register are agreeing to release Embark Sustainability Society from any liability related to COVID-19.Masks are required at all times, until we are seated and eating as socially distanced as possible. Embark Sustainability will also provide sanitation supplies for wiping down furniture, and hand sanitizer for guests to use. There are also hand washing stations at the event location.COMMUNITY AGREEMENTThis event is hosted with the intention to provide a fun environment for folks to try new recipes and cook together.
