It's National Social Work Month! Please join the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers for our first Advocacy Day.

Social justice

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include learning and activities related to the pursuit of social justice. See https://nscsw.org/pd/#pdMandated for more info.

<p>Advocacy Day creates opportunities for social workers, social work students and social work educators to join together with clients and community organizations in advocating for change.</p><p>There are two sessions during the day. Attendees are welcome to join either, or both. All are welcome.</p>
Note: For members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, participating in this session may be counted as informal professional development.<h2>Sessions</h2><h3>9:30-11:30 a.m. — Turning Promises into Policy </h3><p>Nova Scotia now has an Office of Mental Health and Addictions; how can social workers - and those we ally with - develop the vision for mental health and substance use services in our province?  </p><p>First voice speakers, direct service providers and advocates will share perspectives with <strong>Dr. Sam Hickcox</strong>, chief officer of the Office of Mental Health and Addictions. This community forum is organized in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Nova Scotia Division. </p><h3>1:00-3:30 p.m. — Advocating for Intersectional Social Justice Policies for Nova Scotia</h3><p><strong>Senator Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard</strong> will moderate an exploration of the social policy framework developed by the Nova Scotia office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA-NS) and NSCSW.  The intersectional and evidence-informed framework can be used to develop policy  and legislation that supports the well-being of all Nova Scotians.
